I5 Normal noise at idle?
2008 H3X 35k miles
Curious...
Motor has always had a "ticking" at idle (cannot really hear it with hood closed). Is this normal noise for this motor?
Kinda reminds me of an 1980 Plymouth slant 6 I had at one point of which I had to adjust the valves about every 15k miles (just not quite as loud as the slant 6). Here is a short clip of the sound...you can hear it better 3/4 of the way through.

I would say I have mechanical "ticking" type noise as well and I believe it's just normal engine noise. The closest thing I could equate ine to would be the valves on my VW bus so I think we are talking about the same thing. I listened to your vid and didn't hear anything out of the ordinary although it's kind of difficult to hear the whole engine. I don't think you are refering to an exhaust manifold type ticking and from your description I assume you know what that sounds like. I know that when I get keyed into a noise it always seems a lot more noticeable. If it fits into the engine "symphony" and you don't have any other symptoms, ie shavings in your oil, etc, I would guess it's normal.
I'm sure there will be 4 or 5 posts to disagree but that's gut feeling.
