Default Hydraulic Winch

I have just installed a Mile Marker 12000 pound hydraulic winch on the H3. It get its hydraulic pressure from the power steering
pump. I mounted the winch on a custom mount, (thanks CBPHOTO) I ran into afew problems with this setup. You need
to conect the hydraulic supply line to the pressure port off of the power steering pump and then connect the return line to
the pressure in port on the steering rack. The only problem with this is that the rack has a manifold fittting not a threaded one.
Solution I bought a new set of power steering lines and had a new fitting put onto the pressure line that go's to the rack. The
winch works great and because it is hydraulic it has no duty cycle like a electric one and you don't have to worry about
killing your battery.I did some research and found that most electric winches draw between 200 and 400 amps of power
depending on the amount of load, so if the typical alt puts out 120 amps the rest of the power has to come from the battery
or can also kill your alt. Here are som pictures of the installation.

Looks good Jim...Hope you don't mind a piece of helpful criticism.

Re-route the hydralic lines through the small mini grille with the honeycomb holes..I think they would look better and less obvious coming from lower down..besides, those hoses will rub the chrome off the big grille eventually.

I'm with Den on this one .. looks good but them hoses needs to be re-routed in my opinion. Also, regarding the amperage requirements on an electrical winch you are making a good point. The Warn 9.5ti requires UP TO 425 amps assuming 9500 lbs and a line speed of 6.67feet/minute. If anyone is worried about this whole bit give Ohio Generator a call and have them custom build you a high amp alternator :-) Great folks to deal with and excellent products.

Looks like a clean install. Look at how I ran my electric cables for my winch. It looks cleaner.

With the exception of the hydralic hoses poppin' out of the grill ... not dissin' the install job here .. personal preference would've been to come up from the bottom side instead, think it would've been cleaner. Also, on the same note ... I assume you're stuck with havin' the winch on 24/7 with that setup or ... ?? The way I understood it you couldn't just cap those hoses when you take the winch off, right!?

Personally I'd go electrical along with a built alternator .. it adds about $300 bucks to the total cost but at least I wouldn't have to worry about delivering enough juice plus it would be easy to remove when not in use ..

Your install looks very clean brach ... about as clean as you could expect!

Yeah, electric winches can pull a pretty large draw on the system. A good high amp alt, and a dual battery set up will usually handle it without any problems though. Most wheelers still prefer electric, in the event the engine stalls and they can't get it re-started, they can still winch out.

If anyone is looking for an upgrade to their alternator let me know ... I've done business with Ohio Gen. before and they've always come through for us on other boards when it comes to group buys ... I think we had to meet a minimum of 10 units back when I got mine for the Avalanche ... if there's an interest hollar at me and I'll get in touch with em again and see what I can do .. If I recall correctly I BELIEVE I paid $220 for a 245 amp alternator but memory is failing me here in my old age .. LOL!

Nice installation, especially since there aren't many H3 examples to look at.
