whenever i buy a new vehicle i do the first oil change at about 100 miles (yes, one hundred). if you do it yourself, you'll likely see the oil shimmering a silver color with countless tiny metal shards left over from the machining process. i don't like to have those metal bits circulating the engine for a few thousand miles.

The system is designed or programmed to5k to 15k on your oil. If I think what I think it is on how it does this, we had this type of monitor when I was in the Marines in Okinawa years ago. You ran a probe down the dip stick tube and the hand held device would analyze the oil and tell you if it needed changing. I believe it monitors metal, sulfur, water and even fuelcontent in the oil. But I bet the one in the H3only does metal (I'm guessing), I would send your oil to an oil analysis program if you really want to know about your oil.

The GM oil life system (GMOLS)uses an algorithm based on crank shaft revolutions and temperature.

Then if thats the case if you deviate from the oem recommended weight your oil change indicated by the formula can be off and then also if you use a synthetic you could be wasting your money by changing your oil to soon. And Alsothen its basically another "Idiot Indicator" so you will have to change your oil eventually by having some kind of warning torture you untill you do.

After researching how the OLS works I think I'll wait for the warning before changing the oil.
