Default "Hot Engine Coolant" in DIC

Hmm, this one has me puzzled. We got our first cold snap yesterday, it was 19 degrees when I started the deuce yesterday morning. Since it was sitting in the driveway, I let it idle for about 10-15 mins to run the heater, melt the ice and warm up the seat. To my surprise, I came out to find "Hot Engine Coolant" in the info center, and the temp gauge was close to pegged. Weird. Also, no heat coming out of the heater, interior still cold, windshield still iced. Since the motor hadn't blown up and not making death noises, I shut it off and immediately restarted to clear the display and reset the gauge; it initially came back, and the gauge almost pegged again, then it cleared and temp went to normal.
All I can figure is the t-stat got frozen and created this? I've run the deuce the previous two winters in Utah, and it was common for me to leave running to warm up in the morning with no issues.

IDE start by changing the thermostat & checking antifreeze level...if low do a pressure test...
