That's because the cable that runs to the latch is directly above above the fire pit.

One more reason I removed that totally useless hood latch!

I can't imagine any way without doing more damage, the cable has been melted only inches from the latch.... with the skid plates you can't even see up into the compartment from underneath. Even if you could the latch sits right above the intake making it difficult almost impossible. Maybe try pushing the hood forward and prying it?

I would try removing the air box cover... It made provide the access you need to move the latch manually. Depending on how much damage it sustained it shouldnt take much force if you dont pry up on it too much. I once managed the latch on my Vette with a coat hanger before buying the tool. Sorry about the damage to your truck.

The latch on the H2's are very strong (like a bear trap) - it takes a big screw driver to move it even a fraction of an inch. The release cable runs along the very top of the firewall almost under that rear hood seal, not accessible by removing the air box covers.

I removed mine its is completely unneeded and serves no real function - maybe only placed on our trucks because of lawyers ?..the H1 does not have it - thats good enough for me.

 

The air box and the cowl are the painted parts up against the front glass and whether you are trying to save them or not they are in the way. You have to pry up on the hood so you can get something between the hood and weather stripping to pull the latch towards the glass. The H2 uses a single latch close to center at the back of the hood. It is the same latch used on the Corvette it happens so often with them they came up with a special tool that pops the latch and it just a small J-hooked piece of aluminum rod with a rubber tip to minimize scratches.
