Headlight Assembly
I had a bird hit my driver-side headlight assembly. It split the mount in half right between the headlight and amber light. I removed the brush guard, grill, "radiator cover", and a few screws ... and the broken unit came right out. I managed to fiberglass it back together and put it back in.
As I fully intend to break it next time I have to mess with it, I was curious about the aftermarket headlight assemblies being sold on eBay:
- Has anyone bought one of these aftermarket assemblies?
- Can you recommend a supplier?
- How was the quality and fit compared to the OEM?
- Was the assembly mount metal or composite/plastic like the OEM?
- Could you tell any differences visual difference once everything was reinstalled?
Has anyone installed any brush guard grill over their lights for added bird/brush protection?
Anyone use a special tool (other than a small screwdriver) to pull out the center plug of the wheel well fasteners?

Remove
-disconnect headlight harness and maybe remove headlight bulb
-tow hooks (1 bolt each, don't lose the "washer")
-brush guard (2 bolts each leg, remember where the plastic spacer goes)
-grille (clips and 5 nuts (3 on top, 2 behind slats)
-radiator cover (4 bolts)
-retaining bracket/grille mount (1 screw and retaining clip)
-head light assembly (3 bolts each, 1 is a bit out of sight)
-retaining bracket/grille mount (1 screw and retaining clip ... flipped up in the pic)
-disconnect remaining harness connections
-try to remove the headlight assmebly
-if you have problems, you may want to pull the wheel and wheel well liner (about 10 fasteners).
-the amber unit is held into the headlight assembly with 3 screws.

what year do u have, thats a lot of stuff to do just to replace that,is your head light and corner parking light attached together cause i have seen them sold as one piece. i was not expecting that much to replace the corner light. when i looked and popped the grille off it looks like it is just clipped on and would just pull out.
Mine is an 06. If you don't have a brush guard, then you save the tow hook and brush guard steps. The headlight and amber light are in a composite (plastic-like) assembly. Once you get the entire assembly out, it is just the 3 screws that hold it to the assembly.
It really was a piece of cake and quick.
My only concern: as my assembly was broken in half, it was easy to remove once I got to that stage. HOWEVER, after I repaired it (so it was a whole assembly again) and put it back into the cavity, but I didn't reconnect the harness first. I could not budge it to get more room to reconnect the harness (I got my wife's little hands in there though to do it.) Anyways, I am not sure what "locked" the assembly back in place, so I couldn't move it. I am not sure if my repair had the fit just slightly out of whack. I also didn't want to pull very hard on the assembly for fear of breaking it again. (This is why I said you might have to pull the wheel/wheel well.)
Reminder: one of the 3 bolts that hold the assembly to the body chassis has this retaining rod that ties it to the side quarter panel. You'll see it. Nothing hard to do. Also, plug the harness in as your slipping the unit back into place =)

kool, actually my hummer looks like yours in the pic, i figured it out as i went along and it was easy, while i have it all out going to replace the side lights with led ones cause i have a chrome cover's covering it on the out side and the only way to access that bulb is having that all out. also gonna give my recovery loops a fresh coat of paint to touch them up. i had chrome and the winter trashed them, rust all over and chips so gonna go back to my black ones for now until i can get some good chrome . actually going to call my guy up at the dealer and bitch about them cause i only had them 10 months and see if they give me some new ones. will post pics when i get my amber led corner lights and install them. peace out and like i always say HUMMER ON
@lucky
I see we bought the same light bar. I bought the rear one too, but I just have never taken the time to put it on. I want to blind tailgaters, but I am just not sure of the look with it on.
I had to mod my entire lighting system for Europe, so my DRL are BA9/233 bulbs installed into the headlight enclosures. My amber front facing enclosure and amber side markers are my front turn indicators. (And, don't even get me started on the rear light mods.)
On your year H3, how do your ambers work up front? Are the front facing ones you are replacing still DRLs? How about the side amber markers ... are they active?
P.S. I gave my brush guard (at the weld points) and the recovery loops/tow hooks a shot of Rust O'leum paint while they were off. The brush guard I used the flat black (high temp) paint which was a great match. The other was gloss and as I did the whole thing it too was a good match =)
