Default H3 vs H3 Alpha

I have had my H3 for a couple of weeks now and it does seem to labour a little (unless I use a boot load of right foot).

It doesn't bother me at this stage, however later down the track I think I will be looking for a little more power.

As yet we only get the H3inthe 3.7L Vortec,I look with envy at the US Hummerweb site and in particular the figures of the Alpha.

This is penciled in for Australiaend of next year begining 2010... (seems like such a long way off)..

Do you lucky buggers in the US think there is much difference in the two modelsin both fuel economy and performance ???

I would be interested to knowas orders for the Alpha are being taken here and I want to be near the top if it's worth it!!!!....

Cheers

Well, I have had both....and the Alpha does perform better for me......
The V8 is the right combo for the H3....has enough power to go when you need it to.......also gas mileage has been really good to.....around the city I've been averaging 17.17mpg. I can't complain about that! My 3.7 was only getting around 12mpg.....and seem to labor a lot getting around......I guess it just depends on your particular vehicle, as others with the 3.7 love it and get good mileage......
The only bad thing is I wish my 3 was a little bigger......

Hard to believe you are getting that good with an Alpha. Are you sure you did your calculations correctly??

I would go for the Alpha..no question, it is hand's down night and day difference between the I5 and the V8.

I owned two H3's with the I5 and it was OK..even with 35's. Now add a full truck of dogs, camping gear, winch, and all the other needed items, that I5 wouldn;t do it for me heading up to the mountains. The V8 took care of that though.

GoFaster,
yes I'm doing the calculations right.....I've been hitting my trip meter every time I fill up and it has been consistent on the reading....the one time I drove it a little harder I only got 15mpg, then I went back to my regular driving habits and it was at 17mpg again.....I did put in some octane boost just for comparison, and that gave me about 30 miles extra.....Every time I fill up I write down the gallons it takes, and then check the mileage I went.....it's been really consistent.
Seems like I do pretty good with the gas mileage...I have absolutely no complaints.

Wow, that really is a _very_ good gas mileage (sorry, don't mean to thread jack). My H3 alpha gets on average 14 mpg all things included. I have been able to average 16 Mpg when I drive very very thoughtfully and focus ONLY on smooth gas saving driving techniques.

I did drive an I5 H3 a couple of times and I thought it did very well considering how heavy a vehicle it is tasked with moving. The one thign I SO wish the H3 had, would be a modern 5 or 6 speed transmission. As it is now with only a 4 speed, it hunts between 3rd and 4th a LOT when driving up the 6 - 10% grades I have on the local freeways and toll roads here in Southern California.

Other than that, I like my H3 alpha A LOT! :-)

Drove both my brother's I5 H3s and got the Alpha. IMO there is a huge difference in power, response, torque and general drive response. Not much wrong with the I5 except that it is a little weak for the H3.

I consistantly get 11.7 - 12.1 in City. On highway going 70 Cruise I get 17.2 MPG - going 78 on Cruise I get 15.0 MPG

On mileage in the H3 Alpha we average 15 mpg. Most of that is city driving. Might get a little better than 16 on the highway.

I've had my h3 for almost 4 days now. my previous ride was an ss commodore 5.7l V8 with mods such as ls1 edit, new headers, exhaust and cai mod which gave me ~240rwkw. prior to taking a h3 for a test drive i'd read about peoples gripes with the 5cyl 3.7l so I wasn't expecting much. however when it came to the test drive I was pleasantly surprised with the responsiveness of the engine. i'm perfectly happy with my non-alpha h3 for now....
