H3 - Chevrolet or Real Hummer ??
I asked a family member that works at a chevy dealer when I was in the market and he explained to me that the frames are not the same. The rails are the same. The crossmembers etc are completely different. Its pretty easy to see that from the post above showing the two pictures. The main rails are the only similarity. although...somebody was crafty and made a nice optical illusion there! They are in fact the same length even though the H3 looks much shorter and stockier. Use your fingers to measure the rail lenghts..there the same.

Well I'll be....it is longer. about 30 pixels. BUT..that means the picture isnt comparing apples and apples. If you scale that up, it comes to about 125" which is the wheelbase of the extended Colorado models. It should be comparing the 111" standard model which is what the H3 uses. details details..
But to cloudy this up even more...here is what wikipedia has to say on the matter of the GMT 345 and 355 platforms
The GMT 355 is the redesigned S/T compact pickup truck design and the successor to the GMT 325 series. GMT 355s are built in Shreveport, Louisiana and Rayong, Thailand. GMT 355 uses an A-arm independent suspension in front and live axle with leaf springs in the rear. The Atlas straight-4 and straight-5 engines are widely used, with a V8 rumored in the future. A 4-speed automatic and 5-speed manual transmission are also specified.
The GMT 355 platform was actually a joint-venture with Isuzu, though most of the design was done by Isuzu. Part of the agreement was that GM had to sell it first in the U.S., to be sold legally as an Isuzu. Despite its close numbering to the GMT 360 (also part of the S/T family) series, the two programs share nothing.
The GMT 345 is the derivative of this platform as used on the Hummer H3.
GMT 345 Applications:

GMT 355 Applications:

At least the rumors arent saying that we're driving knockoff Isuzus...
I for one don't really care who technically made it....its still fun!

You definitely "get" the H3, good observations and you will enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine... Good luck and we want pix!

I test drove an H3 at another dealership and thought it was a cool vehicle, I was very impressed when I compared it to the H2 SUT we already own. It is more nimble and zips in and out of a parking spaces and traffic with ease. I told this new saleman what I was told at the other dealership and while he did agree that the Colorado, Canyon and the H3 are built in the same plant he did say that it was just GM making the best advantage of the assembly plants and allowing the H3 to be cost effective as well. He said that GM designed the H3 to take advantage of some of the parts that were used in other GM vehicle but that was strictly to reduce cost. But GM never considered using less expensive parts from other GM vehicle that would reduce the ability of the H3. I was surprised when he appologized for the other dealer salemans and wanted some additional info so he could pass this situation onto GM. He even mentioned that a V8 was in the H3's future if I was willing to wait for it. My final impressions are as follows: 1: The H3 is not a Colorado reborn (other than build by GM in the same plant and maybe some minor parts), 2: the H3 is not an H2 and it was never intended to be. This is not to say the H3 is less capable, it was targeted to those who wanted a Hummer in a somewhat fuel efficient alternative that was smaller and perhaps easier to drive and use day to day. In todays world with gas issues, smaller parking spots and a public that considers the H1 and H2 to be nothing but fuel hogs it seems the H3 is a respectiful alternative. About the only drawback to the H3 was the roof height, being 6'4" the ceiling comes up fast. But this is overcome if you are willing to adjust the seat back down a little. Think I am going to buy it, now all I need to do is agree on the color with my wife. Thanks to all who replied and offered their points of view, it was very useful!

You can get a V-8 in an H3 now with the Alpha. The H1 is basically a hand built truck and does use some parts from other mfgs. The H2 is built by Hummer but on a high tech assembly line. I have had H1s, H2s and H3s. They have all been fanatastic vehicles, especially for off road. The H1 is a blast to drive off road but sometimes the trails geta little tight for the beast. I have the H3 for the little mountain trails and tight spots that the H1is a little too big for. You will find that you enjoy the H3 every bit as much as your H2. I would also let the dealer know about that salesperson as the dealer doesn't want an a-hole like that working for him and would appreciate your call.
Well the salesman was an A-Hole but he is not all wrong. As DocOlds said the H2 & H3 share platform with other GM lines. I first want to say I love my H3 in and out, and I actually like the fact that they share the same powerplant with the other models (that tells me parts will always be around). But where I felt GM dropped the ball was with the H3 interior. As I said I love it, but it's basicly the same damn interior as the Canyon/Colorado with a little extra bling. Im not saying I don't like the interior, but when I get in it I feel like I'm in my friends Chevy.
I do love mine also, that's why I'm on my 2nd and 3rd one
. But, I had an 07 Silverado that I traded in on my 07 H3 and I drive a Malibu for work (damn govt cars) and the basic layout isn't far off from eachothter. All I know for sure is that 1) My car is serviced at a Hummer dealer 2) It says Hummer all over it 3) I'm invited to Hummer Happenings 4) My insurance card says Hummer and 5) I'm paying Hummer for both of them. I really don't care what all of those other people say or think. As my wife's license plate says: DNT U H8.
