I installed the Volant because I couldn't stand how difficult it was to get the factory lid on and off. Plus I wanted a re-usable filter. This setup with the Volant pre-filter catches everything even in dusty Arizona. I eventually added the Air Doc to get rid of the resonator and have a nice smooth flow of air to the engine. The Air Doc does have to be trimmed down on both sides to work with the Volant box because the box sits closer to the engine than the stock setup.

Volant also brings in air from the factory fender vent which I like. I have never and will never install an intake which seals to the hood.
Does Volant make just a stand alone replacement filter? How does a dry filter compare with an oiled one?

I don't know if there is anything different on the Cali vs. the 49 state legal hummer. I have mods (Supercharger, Full Exhaust/Headers) and mine is still California Legal. Older cars required different smog equipment but I don't think there are any physical components on the ca legal one. It may just be a tune.
