Default Gearbox ?

Just came from the tire shop . The guy told me to replace the gearbox before doing an alignment . There's a 15-20 % play on the wheel
He said the wheel will not be straight (a problem Id be dealing since last alignment)

Is there any adjustment on the gb . How is to replace
They charge me 380 including part and labor (seems fair)

Is there any upgrade part to considerate
Thx

the AGR Box is what you need.

H2 SB2 Series Power Steering Box From AGR 264352

Hummer H2 SB2 Series Power Steering Box From AGR 264352: Hummer Parts Club

while you're at it you might as well get the H2 Power Steering Super Pump by AGR 807256 for complete tight tolerance

Mine had alot of play too.

There are ways to adjust the slack in the wheel, one is the right way, seen here: Steering Box Freeplay Adjustment

The wrong way, which is what I did is to locate the hex bolt and nut on the top of the box. Loosen the nut and turn the hex bolt clockwise. Mine took about 3/4 of a turn to get the play out. I am not 100% happy with the results while driving but I do not know if the play is now steering box related or tire related.

The next time I get the front end apart I will do it the right way and see.

@alarmy thanks . It seems a little pricy. Do you know what would be the advantage going with the AGR . Other than being Hd is there a difference how the truck handle . I agree in replacing also the pump
I remember there was a post few months ago about this product

@thaber . Great find . That info may help. If I decide to upgrade to the AGR . I may do some adjustment for now to save some bucks before get it

hi H2Miami, the AGR box is basicly designed to go with bigger heavy tires but is also used for H2 standard tires hence, HD components go into the manufacturing of their box and pump and equally resulting in long service life.

a key fector to acheaving the AGR long lasting box and pump without any issues is proper installation as per AGR recommendation and use of quality power steering fluid hence, a number of people overlook this area and get it wrong resulting in issues.

Good info Tim,
I wouldn't call what you did the wrong way, but if you needed 3/4 of a turn your box probably could use rebuilt, or replaced.

No one ever seems to think to drain and replace power steering fluid (myself included) unless of course there is a problem.

This can lead to a little extra wear and tear on everything.

We've had good success with the "wrong" method if the box isn't too bad.

Loosen the locking nut, turn the hex bolt until you feel resistance and then back off about 90 degrees or a 1/4 of a turn. Then tighten the locking nut.

Take it for a test drive and see if it feels better, and also make sure that it isn't too tight and returns back to center on its own.

I did a 2500HD truck for a guy once, and it also took about 3/4+ of a turn to get it "tight" and get rid of the steering play, but the wheel was much harder to turn that it should be. I was going to readjust it, but he said it would be fine...

I think he liked not having to move his steering wheel a 1/4 turn in either direction before it did anything haha.
