Default Fuel economy improvements?

We just bought a 2009 H3 with the 3.7 I5 and was wondering what is the best way to improve the fuel economy that is cost effective?
Also any ideas on the best grille guard for function and not just looks?

I replaced our stock filter with a AEM Dryflow one and got 20MPG from Punxsy, Pa to Cincinnati, Oh. $40 for a 100K Mile filter that needs no oil and just washes out.

Thanks for the help. I looked into the Air Doc and it looks reasonable.
I also looked into the K&N cool air intake and they boasted 10 hp gain @ about 4700 RPM, but who in their right mind would run their H3 @ 4700 RPM for any length of time, so the K&N looks like a waste of money.

The cheapest start is running with your tires all inflated to 38-40PSI cold, then add an OEM performance filter replacement. Then you could look at an Intake, PCM tune, and CAT back exhaust in that order, if you want to do even better.

Default Well Worth it

I added a Borla Cat Back Exhaust and a K&N Intake.
I see about a 2-3 MPG Difference. Depending on my Driving.

Was it worth the amount of Money I spent? Not for MPG but the Sound and increase power at the top end are well worth it.

When your current tires wear out, get Michelin LTX highway or all-season tires in 265. I picked up 2 mpg on our motorhome running them (205 size).

My wife has successfully tested the SMA brush guard, let's just say that it's Nissan proof! LOL

I average a hair above 18 around town. Short trips on the expressways I get around 22, though I haven't taken it on a long trip yet. I'll report back in a couple weeks. This is a stock '08 H3 with stick shift.
