Custom wheels
I'm thinking that depends greatly on the crowd. I think most I've seen around here and other Hummer specific boards tend toward a LOT more sidewall and are running 17 to 18 inch wheels with some going up to maybe 20's. Not sure I've seen anyone post here since I've been coming here for the past several months that are running rubber band tires.
I see them around though - some wheels for sale on craigslist and pictures of them online and a few around town but personally I have no idea what they are running.

Would personally have to agree based on aesthetics. I would think a vehicle of this size needs at least 7" of sidewall.
As to your question, you can make just about anything fit; turning becomes a concern though. A narrow 35" on a 12" wide rim with the usual -44 offset should turn fine with nothing more than a leveling kit. Then again you need to consider local laws concerning tires poking out of the wheel wells. There is also the exponential increase in the price of wheels and tires above 20". High offset can also equate to future suspension problems.
I'm not partial to what I call the "turtle look" unless a truck has serious lift but then fitting into your average garage is also out of the question. For reference I'm running 22X10 +0 offset with 37x13.5/22 M/T tires, no lift. No more rub than the factory tires but I did have to remove my roof crossbars to fit in my garage.
Good luck with your build. Think every purchase through and shop around for best bang for the buck.
