Went to Costco to order 315x75x16 BFG M/T tires for my H3. They said they would not sell me the tires for my H3 because I had 7 1/2" factory rims and the manufacturer states they should only be mounted on 8" to 10" rims.Now I know BFG wants to sell tires so I figure there must be a GOOD reason not to mount these size tires on these rims.
Would this be a dangerous situation? I will try Discount tire.

 

Call Tire Rack..they are pretty knowledgable about what's right and wrong with tire and rim combinationss..they may give you a second opinion...

Ebay has several listings of 315's at great prices right now.

I had 32's on stock wheels on my old montero sport ES and they were fine. I think the wheels were 6.5 inches.

 

That black H3 been to MOAB with those tires and NO problem at all with the stock rims.

The reason Costco won't sell them to you, and why manufaturers say not to mount the tires on narrow rims is because as the rims get narrower, the bead doesn't seat properly and can come off while you are driving causing a wreck. The manufacturer and the place that is installing them doesn't want to be responsible, so they won't do it. Other places that deal specifically with tires, like Tire Rack, Goodyear, or other tire companies know that the limitations are there, and the probability of there being a probelm from wheels that are 1/2 inch narrower are slim. The most probable problem is that the tires may wear funny because the sidewall is pulling the outside tread up away from the road surface.

 

If you want to buy from costco just do a cash and carry and dont tell them what they are for. my friend did that and just cash and carry. you can find some one for around 50.00 to mount them on if costco has the best price. discount will match the costco price.
