Default Buying H1, Question on serving

Dear Hummer owners,

I'm about to invest in a Turbo Diesel 6.5. It will run around 50K. It's a 2003 model with very few miles on it.

1)Can you tell me what the upkeep will cost me per year for servicing?
2)If something goes wrong, is it hard to repair? What are the costs involved? I was told if something goes wrong, its a huge project and everything needs to be ripped apart

Can someone help please.

Thank you.
Dave

Servicing costs obviously depend on type of use and mileage. If you do not offroad at all your costs will be less. H1s are not that difficult to do a lot of the work on if you have the space and are mechanically inclined.

A typical 12K SERVICE WILL RUN BETWEEN $1500-$2000.00. That will include all filters, tire rotation, fluids and replacement of the odd ball joint, etc. Most of that you should be able to do on your own.

It is important to know that the service has been kept up to date. Deferred maint. can add up quickly. Also trucks that are not driven much can still have problems and issues. It would be worthwhile to have someone knowledgable about H1s look at the truck and pull the service history for you. Where is the truck?

Manny ( HMCOleap ) is in NH. He wheels a lot in that area and may know someone close enough to look at the truck with you. PM HMCOLeap and see if he knows anyone that can help you.

Thank you for your reply.

When I saw my mechanic today he discouraged me to buy it telling me that it was a hard truck to maintain. I'm not very mechanically inclined but willing to learn offcourse.

Tells me that if someone goes wrong, then it's a huge project.
Tells me that yearly cost to maintain it is $10,000 approx.

The truck has 1200 miles on it not driven a lot and is a 2003 in in Northern Texas.

Can I afford to buy it? yes. But I don't want to spend too much maintaining the truck. I plan to use this vehicle on the beach on weekends but mainly will see the road.

Aside from my questions,

what is the service schedule like and cost?

And my final question is can I convert this 6.5 into running vegie oil? I have an old Ford Diesel which I was able to convert. Not sure how this Turbo diesel will react to it.

Thank you again for prompt reply.

wow someone scared you to death. i am a hummer mechanic and the vehicle will cost in service no where near what your mechanic told you. service on the H1's is every 3000 miles which is a oil change. at 6000 miles you will want to rotate the tires and replace the fuel filter.
every 12000 miles you have to service all the fluids. the oil change service we charge $125.00
6k service runs around $450.00 and the 12k cost around $1200.00. i have people with some of the other high line vehicles that pay double what the hummer cost.
the key to it is get someone that knows the vehicle to work on it and stay on these web forums and ask questions.

Owning a Hummer is a lot like having a sick mistress in the hospital. She is a lot of fun when shes working and you can't afford not to pay the bill to get her well.I have had an H-1 for 4 years and I have not spent 10k on it in that length of time, unless you count goodies that I added. It is like anything else, it is a machine and it will break. Previous use and care play a major role, but just a blanket statement like that is wrong.
