Default Airing down tires

Is there a rule of thumb for airing down your tires? I'm going to take some trails today with new tires but not sure what to air them down to any suggestions?

I am not sure there are hard and fast rules, but I air down to about twenty pounds, when I plan on going up step dirt roads. It always seems to help in me getting where I'm going I have the stock adventure package tires 285's
When back on faster roads, I air back to thirty eight pounds

Not knowing which tires you have, the ply of the side wall can effect how well they air down. I would recommend staying around 20 psi just so you keep the bead... Otherwise start looking at some Hutchinson beadlocks...

18-20 PSI for dirt/rock should be no problem.

Sand, I run 10 in the rear and 12 in the front.
These are the stock 285 Duelers in the sand from back in 07.

I have BFG 285/75/16, every week in the sand dunes, front and rear at 10psi, sometimes down to 8psi if in really soft sand area..then still room to drop a little more in necessary(not needed yet).....only 3 popouts in as many years (touch wood lol..)...

As stated below depends on the tires you have and how rigid the sidewall is...where and what you drive on and importantly your driving style...

enjoy...

I have 315/75/16 goodyear fierce attitudes and they have a 10 ply sidewall.

The fierce attitude M/T has a 3 ply sidewall and an "E" load rating. You will have to air them down (depending on terrain) a little lower to get the sidewall to flex as much as say a 3 ply sidewall load range "D" tire like the MTZs or a lot more than the 2 ply sidewall of the stock 285s which are a load range "C" tire.

Hope this info helps!
