My H3 has the Monsoon stereo package. I am wanting to add a JL Audio 12" sub. Anybody ever try connecting an aftermarket sub to the existing Monsoon amplifier? Just wondering if it would push a 12".

I have a JL amp and digital audio converter and everything I need to install. Just thought I would ask before I go through the trouble of taking my interior apart to run power wires to install the aftermarket amp.

The factory amp only pushes an 8, It's not going to push a 12 very well. It might thump but with a 12 I'm thinking you want a boom instead.

 

The factory sub is 100rms to doors, 100rms to sub. Don't bother with it. I'll tell you the same thing I told someone else here, if you want to do the whole system on a budget get a nice 5 channel amp, mount it to the box that way everything can be easily pulled out.

 

course you could just hook it up and hear what it sounds like,since u rarely use full power anyway

 

Knowing car audio I can tell you 100rms is nothing. I can rip a fart with more bass.

 

my bet is;out of 100 people,99 could not tell which speaker is hooked up,and the other guy is guessin

 

If he wants a 12, then my guess is your going to hear it. Otherwise I would just stick with the 8 and keep all my cargo space.

It is my understanding that the factory monsoon speakers are 1ohm so the factory amp would be 100w at 1ohm. Your aftermarket sub is most likey 2ohm and maybe 4ohm. When speaker resistance increases power decreases. Every time the ohm load doubles the available power decreases by roughly half. So the monsoon amp at 2ohm would provide roughly 50w to the speaker and at 4ohms roughly 25w. You would eventually burn up the monsoon amp. You should check the RMS rating of your sub and and match an amp to this rating. The 12" sub most likey has a RMS much higher than the power output of the factory amp. Install the aftermarket amp now and you will be much happier with the sound of you sub.

 

Thanks for all the responses. I kind of figured the factory amp wouldn't cut it, but I didnt know the ratings.
Next question: where's the best place to run the power wire through the firewall for the aftermarket amp?
