In all of the research on swapping out engines, theres way more talk about dropping in something else other than the orig 3.5. So has anyone put something back in other than the 3.5 that was easy, cost effective, with relatively minor issues? I'm a NASA welder, not a car mechanic, but I've worked on cars in my personal life for 30 years.

Has anyone simply replaced their 3.5 for an identical crate 3.5?

I just did this swap just a few days ago. I have a 06 hummer h3 with the 3.5, I pulled the engine out in exactly 6.5 hours time, not rushing. And I got a engine from a 06 colorado 3.5 ro replace it and it took the same amount of time. Everything was absolutely identical from the Colorado to the hummer.
