I live in nj. Just purchased 04 h1 to drive to mountains on weekends. Love the ride but seems to run above 3/4 on temp gauge when trying to climb long hills. Is this normal. Any suggestions to improve cooling?

 

Never had an 04 or an Optimizer engine but all of mine run at about 190-210. On steep or long grades the temperature will climb to 230 or so if I don't slow down some. AMG says that it is fine and within spec but I usually slow down enough to keep the temps in the 210-215 range.

 

Is there room for extra electric cooling fans to add on?

 

They typically don't help much in an H1. It us very tight in the engine compartment and only so much air is going to get through there anyway.
