2003 Hummer H2 Issues
Just wanted to say I have returned to the complete and utter love of this truck. Hummer H2 Black on Black. After going Absolutely ape **** on the dealer and eventually calling and email corporate enough times that they just wanted to shut me up this is what happened.
Total Cost to Me ($5100)
1- Ordered Brand New After market transmission from Mad Dog heard mixed reviews but went with there stage 3 but lets factory glide shifting so that it was nice and smooth
2- Dealership after ****ing up sooo badly ended up doing the following
-Installing Transmission Incorrectly
-Sending Transmission back to have it replaced
-Installing Transmission Correctly
-Installing New Radiator with aftermarket transmission cooler and ALL lines replaced
-Install new Thermostat Gauge
-Installing Complete Pedal Assembly Inside the Truck
-Removing 4 Broken Bolts from the exhaust manifold and replacing them all including new exhaust manifolds and gaskets.
The truck went back and forth for 8 months include me towing the truck 7 times after the dealership gave it back and assured me it was good to go. They refused to issue me any sort of refund BUT they did a ton of work at no cost to me. All and all not the best way to use my hummer but hes a ****ING BEAST now.

I want to start by saying I love this truck just have lost faith
1.) I randomly would get a "Reduce throttle" followed by a check engine light and the hummer would go into limp mode.
-----They replaced the Throttle body and the Throttle Body Sensors
1a.) The problem continues
----- I end up bringing it to the dealer they tell me it wasnt the throttle body at all it had to do with the fuse box.
WEEEE) They fix it and it runs amazing

After the garage didn't fix your first problem and then you took it to a hummer dealer who has hummer mechanics and fixed your issue, why would you take it to any garage when it comes to the transmission issue? So you changed out the trans but not only have same error but it's leaking all over the place. When it comes to my hummer, I only let hummer techs work on it. I rather pay more and get it right than have the issues you're having now. If I were you I would tow it to hummer dealer, find out what's really wrong then demand the garage to take back and refund you the transmission you probably didn't need.
I mean the LQ and the 4L are the same engine and trans in many of Chevy/GMC vehicles.
As for a "true" Hummer mechanic, since there arent any Hummers being made anymore, I would say that there arent any dealerships anymore and so that would probably mean that there arent any (or as many) factory trained specialized mechanics...
So the only way to get a real Hummer mechanic is if they happen to work at a specialty shop that deals with just Hummers (and thats probably pretty slim) ....
But, most likely what we probably have available to us is a mechanic who happens to know a little more about the gremlins of the Hummer then the average wrench turner.
With all that being said, I think installing a factory engine or trans isnt a Hummer specific job... like I said because it is something that is common in every truck or Ute out there.
- Of course the mechanic that put the OPs tranny in with the lines all messed up and not checking the trans/cooler setup is an idiot and like it was said shouldnt be working on any car, let alone a Hummer
I think the idea there aren't any real hummers mechanics is a farce. Having had more than 20k worth of work done to my rig in the past 4 years I finally gave the finger to the certified service center off lemon in downtown dallas and decided to take a leap of faith and try another shop and hour out of my way in grapevine. It was a former Hummer Certified service center. The difference between them was night and day. When I described my issues they didn't act like I was speaking swahili and would need to wait to relay what I was saying to the translator that would be in later that day it was like old hat for them they fixed it and I didn't have to turn around the next day for something else that mysteriously would pop up when I have dropped it off at sewell. I had an obscure issue with a aftermarket license plate holder light harness because of my tire carrier I had given up on as a routine maintenance item while they were addressing something else they called me and let me know about the license plate light asked me if I wanted them to fix it I was surprised and said sure. Sewell had told me there wasn't anything that could be done about it and I should look on the internet after having sold me the wrong license plate holder and harness for the OEM tire carrier and me finding out it wouldn't fit. I had been replacing them every 6 months and I'm now about 9 months into the light they put on in grapevine and it shows no signs of damage from any of the car washes I've been in. Little stuff like that makes a big difference in the experience of owning your hummer if you aren't going to be turning the wrench on your own rig. I'm getting ready to drop about another 5k on various items and you can bet when I got for the 4L80E tranny and cooler upgrade I will go to the real hummer mechanics. I think it is worth it to find the techs in your area that have experience with hummers I only wish I had done it sooner.
In my experience, dealerships are more expensive than small shops, but well worth it. The exception is if you are dealing with customized stuff. Engine swaps, big lifts, etc.
Even though Hummer dealerships are gone, you can still find certified Hummer mechanics working at GM dealerships. Honestly though, at this point I'd say if you can find a Chevy/Caddy/GMC dealership that does good work you should be fine.
My '06 is in the shop right now getting some stuff fixed including tranny cooler lines and broken exhaust manifold bolts (forgot about the bolts in my other thread).
