I am new to the forum, and wanted to introduce myself. My name is Erik, I live in Massachusetts, and am looking into buying my first Hummer H3. I will be asking some questions, and look forward to talking with all of you. Have a great day!
I am new to HF, I am actually preparing to make an offer on a friends Hummer and came here to get some insight to the H2 before I jump in, as well as pick the brains of the fine members here about value/offer suggestions.
Here is the situation, my friend has owned his H2 since he bought it new in 2004. Currently has 185,XXX miles, it's in rough shape and has the following laundry list of things wrong:
-needs tires
-needs alignment
-dipstick tube rusted off 4 days ago and needs replaced
-burns some oil
-driver side heated seat has a mind of its own
-currently has a solid chunk of ice wedged between the driver door and the body when you hinge the door open, presuming this is a water leak
-cap lights out
-1 DRL light out
-fog lights do not work
-Factory off road light bar lights do not work
-misfires, needs tune-up
-very rusty underneath
-rear passenger door handle doesn't engage half the time
-radio programming resets itself
-heater controls get haywire sometimes
-instrument cluster panel needs replace; only gas and tach work
I looked up value for it, and in good condition it could maybe pull 5000-7000K, but in the condition it is in I wondered if 3K would be an insult of an offer to buy, with nothing being fixed on his end.
I know what I am getting into, it will not be a daily driver for me. Just a big fun toy for girl that has always loved big SUVs. I downsized from a lifted Yukon to a Terrain 3 years ago and miss it terribly. But the need for better MPG for my MO -> IN travels was necessary.
I know since he moved downtown (I still live in the country) that he currently pays $450 a month for parking, he recently purchased a 2021 CRV last Saturday and had to move his Vette to the outside parking so I took the H2 home so he would have the parking for the Vette. He is selling both the H2 and Vette, but the dealer would not even consider looking at the H2 and they won't give enough for the 50th Ann Vette. I don't want to offend my friend, nor do I want to tarnish our friendship by saying hey "I'll give you 3K as it sits". I feel at best, if he sinks a few thousand into it then he might get 5K for it, but what's the point to spend the time and money just to barely recoup the money spent? Am I off on my logic? No easily bruised feelings on my end, I am currently borrowing the H2 while my Terrain gets the rear main seal replaced and I do not want to give it back HA!
Any input, thoughts and advice would be wonderfully appreciated! I have it for 2 more days. TIA!
if you are offering him 3k and he has to put in a couple k to get at least 5k then he would only be making 3k on the deal either way. so where exactly is the conundrum? want to be a "friend" offer 4k unless you are trying to get it as cheap as possible which then would just make the "friend" an acquaintance. so i guess treat him as you would want to be treated if you where in his shoes.
Thank you bronxteck for the reply. I appreciate you pointing out the obvious to the situation. In my head it made sense, and if it were mine I would not ask 4K for it as it sits. I sold a 2004 Yukon 2 years ago for $4500 that was in far better shape than this particular H2 and didn't need anything done to it. I know they are not the same vehicle, but they are a bit comparable.
they are very comparable parts wise. you will probably have to sort out the same exact issues you did on your yukon. with the added benefits of roof leaks. offer him what you think is fair. i cant see what shape the H2's in but you can. if you think its a 3k truck then offer it. worst he can say is no or he might have no more need for it and say yes. use your yukon knowledge to look and check out the H2 and see if your on the ball.
Well... I made an offer and my friend didn't bat an eye and said "I will be glad to see it stay in the family" -- So, here I am the excited owner of a new to me 2004 Yellow H2 - it's big, obnoxious, and so much fun! HA! I am taking it to a buddy's on Sunday to change plugs, wires, and replace the recently broken dipstick tube (fingers crossed it did not break at the block and the oil pan doesn't need to be dropped).
I have been doing search after search regarding recommended plugs, wires and coil packs. This thing has the infamous P0300 code and will wait to mess with the coil packs and gaskets until we figure out if wires/plugs will fix the code. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. My mechanic buddy recommends the AC Delco, but the forum seems to lean towards the NGK.
It will be in need of tires at some point, currently it has LT315/70R17, what would the advantage or disadvantage be to taking it down to a 285? I've seen a ton of deals on LT285/70R17 and not much for the current tire size. I know this will affect the speedometer ratios as well.
It needs a new instrument cluster, I have a switch issue with the off road lights/fog lights and the driver seat heater has a mind of its' own (another infamous issue). This spring I plan to remove the rack bar off-road lights and potentially the roof rack as well. I am undecided about that. In the meantime it needs a serious detail (inside and out) as well as stickers removed and new decals added.
Thanks for the add and a big thanks to the sharing of so much knowledge in this forum.
