Default Transfer case Confusion

Hey guy whats up. Ive never actually posted in a forum but I've never actually had a problem like I have today.
I have a 07 all wheel drive Hummer with the n4 transfer case.
It is manual.
I have the straight 5 3.7 l

Okay, no matter if it is in drive or reverse there is a clicking noise coming from the transfer case. There is no play in my drive shaft. Meaning there is no forward backward up down or in or out play I have never had to deal with an all-wheel drive vehicle before. Like many others I consider myself a YouTube mechanic LOL I am stumped though there's nothing on about my exact situation. I have seen lots about the plastic piece inside wearing and making sure my planetary gears are time perfectly when I reassemble it.

I guess my question is does anybody know what the clicking sound would be?

To explain the sound it sounds as if somebody put a baseball card in your bike spokes and road at a steady slow pace click click click click click click click click click

Welcome to HF. I MOVED your double post as all Tech questions belong in the vehicle sections.

Miles????????

Are you sure it is not from the front drive shaft CV at the T Case. That is some of the racket they make when worn out. Stretched T Case Chain or worn Plastic Fork are also possibilities depending upon............................... miles.

Even a thrashed U Joint in the Rear Drive Shaft can make that noise. Front CV Half Shafts can make noise when worn and a rock stuck in the brake backing plate can make a bunch of clicking/ticking.

BTW, H3s are more like FT 4WD than AWD. Semi AWD in HI, otherwise 4X4.

How do i pinpoint if it is the cv shaft or the TC. It seems a rather expensive fix if its not even the problem.

When was the last time you changed the T Case fluid and Front Diff Lube?

Couple of ways you can do it:
Easiest is to get under the truck parked on a flat surface with a rubber mallet and tap the drive shaft end near the CV, if it makes noise, other than a thud, the CV is likely your problem.
In park, same flat surface, have someone try to rock the truck forward and back while you are under it listening to where any noise may be coming from.

Next, you can remove the front drive shaft, inspect the CV and U Joint for slop and confirm that the CV boot is not cracked or torn. While the front shaft is off, put the truck in 4 hi lock, and drive it... if the noise is gone it is the front shaft that was causing it. Note: with the front shaft removed, your truck will not drive unless it is in lock.

Put the truck on a lift or stands, in neutral and rotate any tire listening for where your noise may be coming from.

I suspect your Front Drive Shaft CV before the T Case, but anything is possible. It may be a broken gear tooth in front diff which clicks upon rotation. Draining that and inspecting the fluid for metal is a start down that route. If present, pull the front diff cover and inspect gears.

You can buy a replacement front shaft with U Joint and CV joint installed, or just get the CV rebuild kit and a front U Joint and replace those if that is your problem.

Good luck. Please report back with more info and we can help.

Agree with Doc - start with the front shaft CV. Having done this twice, I can say it is not a bad job.

Only suggestion would be to put the transfer case in neutral when you inspect the front shaft. This should relieve any tension on the shaft when you check for play. Last time mine went out, I could not move the shaft by hand when in park, but when the t-case was in neutral there was all kinds of play.

Put the Trans in neutral, not the T Case.
