Default timing chain tension

so I was in the process of replacing the head gasket until I ran thro this issue that I can't see to find a way for it
the timing chain tension is high because the tensioner is on. I can't mount back the cams and sprocket because there is a tension in the chain. how in the world I can less the tension to get more slack on the chain to mount it back where it goes ????

Obviously, you didn't properly secure the chain to prevent the tensioner from extending and most likely maxed out. Sh@t happens, pull the lower front cover to access. Btw, while your in there, get a kit and replace the chain, guides, and tensioner. Now or later, go big or go home, preventative maintenance!

if I aligned the chain on the marks and all and I turned the crank shaft counter clock wise would that do any damage? I had to do that to losen the bolt after I aligned it , I only went like roughly half turn
