I have a h3x and have grandier plans for a gobi rack as well as other ideas for some mods but for now I just want to mount one fuel and one water can obviously mill-spec scepter brand stuff as it's still an easy grab on the shelf item for me where I live. Have both 10L and 20L so in town maybe the small ones with a bit of extra room for stuff but out of town carry the bigger ones. Have seen quit a few fj's with roof mounted 10L very smart as it keeps the c of g down and you still have descent overhead clearance. But for now I was pondering the idea of moving out the X cover & spare 6 & 1/2 " or so and making a small mounting platform on the bottom and having them stay flush with the rear door doing a few measurements it seems like there is enough room to tuck a 20L under the rear wiper arm. Ideas or is this gonna be a solo show on my own.... has anyone had that idea here yet??? I really do not want to move the spare up top until maybe a later date. I have seen a few other setups but some left bad rear blind spots mounting a rack on top of the tire crossways by the rear window like hunners. that would be no go for me.

 

I wouldn't want a "steel plated bomb" on the back of my rig. All it takes is one idiot to rear end you and KA-BOOM!

If I was to do anything like that I would go with a plastic fuel cell for the rear or mount them up top.

 

The ones I have are real mill spec "plastic" made by scepter for canadian u.s.a. as well as the israeli and other worldwide military...... not worried about hangin one off the back of my rig there won't be no ka-boom with these... they "WILL NOT EXPLODE" even if they are shot at or thrown into a fire !! I have been thinkig of this from Summit mounted on the tailgate, one on each side of the spare. Pastic inner liner, steel outer. Tainter, with mounting fuel that high above the bumper line, do you see many vehicles that would be able to reach the fuel cans in a rear-end crash? I know it is exposed outside the frame rails, but that high up looks safe from impacts short of a major rollover or a Mack truck.

 

Plenty of full-size trucks and SUVs around here that can hit above the bumper. The Spare tire pushed into the door and back window gets blown out. I'm just not a fan of fuel cells hanging off the back of any vehicle.

Rotopacks mounted to a well secured roof rack is about the safest method of extra fuel transportation.
