Default Roof weight limit

I’m looking to buy a 2009 H3 with adventure package and want to add a roof top tent. The tent weights around 230 lbs (aluminum hard shell). Is that too heavy for the H3’s roof without adding an aftermarket rack?

I’ve seen the Gobi racks state they can max out at 300lbs. I figured if I had to add a rack to the top, this would be the one to get.

I’m not concerned with the way it’s going to affect how the h3 handles on and off road. I’m ok with that.

Any advice would be very helpful before I pull the trigger on it.

Where did you find a roof top tent that weighs around 230lbs?

Sit back and relax! I looked at the tent you want, yet I only see crossbar mounting, and I don't see the thickness of the base? If there's a way to securely attach to the roof rails without crossbars then it's a good product. The H3 roof static load weight is around 4,700lbs. however the dynamic weight drops based on the mounting.

Like most roof top tents, I know cross rails are the standard, but im not sure there are any options for directly mounting to the cargo rails that are attached to the roof.

You will need to properly secure the cross bars to the rails so it don't take off when driving.

Check the weight limit at the end of that link:
Note: The load per Load Bars must not exceed 55lbs or 25kg, and ensure the load is distributed evenly. For larger loads, additional Load Bars may be needed, please contact Customer Service for any enquiries.”
Other than the price and lead time I’ve been very happy with my Gobi. Every order they get for a rack or any accessories is made to order. They specify a 300 lb dynamic weight limit (i.e. while driving), and over 800 lb static weight limit.
