Default P0017

A little background: I have a rear main seal leak* and didn't realize it, and my daughter was driving the truck. I noticed it sounded rattly and sick, and sure enough, it was very low on oil and threw a P0017 code. I filled it up and cleared the code, and now it seems to run fine** but the code keeps coming back. I read somewhere that with an oil pressure problem, sometimes this code gets thrown because the VVT can't work properly, so I assumed that was the source of that code. Any thoughts on this? Reading tells me to check wiring harness and then sensors (camshaft and crank I think). But wouldn't I expect actual rough running if this were "real?"

*I had a kinked PCV line, replaced that and the oil leak seems to have slowed way down but I'm keeping an eye on it.
**I see a lot of people with this code claiming a rough idle. My idle seems steady, etc, but the truck vibrates quite a lot at idle. It's done this for a while though, prior to this code. Also, it seems to accelerate and/or cruise just fine...the vibration is only noticed at idle.

Interesting. That certainly seemed easy enough. Is there a way to check the part to tell if it's actually bad? I don't think my truck is having the idle problems he's describing.

You do have a rough idle but apparently think it is only a little bit rough. Can't be a little bit pregnant..... get it.

If you are having any VVT issue, why not pule, inspect, clean or replace the Actuator? Easy stuff first.

Did you notice the neglect in maintenance? If not, take another look at those sensors!

My truck is smooth as glass at idle! Inspect the cmp actuator solenoid and monitor your engine oil:

I guess there's more than one way to run rough...usually I think of it as uneven, misfiring, etc. This is different, but you're right...it's definitely not smooth, otherwise the truck wouldn't be vibrating. I will definitely check those sensors.

Thanks

did you read the link to PIP3694C hummerz linked to?
there is also this https://www.obd-codes.com/p0017 it explains how the code gets set
what is the mileage on the truck?

I did read that, very informative. For what it's worth, I found a replacement actuator fairly cheap, so I ordered it. It can't hurt to try, and it seems like a pretty common failure point, so if it's not the problem, I have a spare for when it becomes one.

I have about 180K miles. So it's not exactly young.

Before replacing the fuel pump, I was getting a LOT of different error codes. Right now I'm just getting this one and P0449, the evaporative emissions stuff...but one thing at a time. I don't recall this code (P0017) getting thrown then, but I may have missed it. The vibration at idle has been there for a while, but the first time I recall seeing the code was when it was run with low oil due to that undetected RMS leak (I had a kinked PCV hose, since repaired...I likely will still have some sort of leak there but I'm keeping an eye on it). I read that oil pressure issues can trigger that code, so I assumed it would go away once I refilled it with oil (even before this, I had done a change recently, so it's not dirty) but it hasn't.
