Hummer H3For the Hummer driver who wants the rugged look and off road capabilities of the Hummer, but in a smaller size and with a more fuel economy friendly engine.
Hey guys, was putting my water pump back on and misread the measurements as ft/lbs and not in/lbs and snapped a bolt off. Will I be ok without it given its place or should I leave it to a pro? I purchased a bolt extraction kit but the job seems way too tedious given the size and location of the bolt. Any help would be appreciated before I fill it back up with coolant. Thank you.
You are going to want to remove the water pump. Then using a welder burn a thick washer to bolt in block. Then weld nut to washer. It should come out then. You will want to avoid an easy out like the plague 😆. And I would not go near it with a drill.
Did you take the water pump off to see if any part of that broken bolt is protruding out to grab onto with either a bolt extractor or pliers? If so, you've got a decent chance of threading it out. I'm having a difficult time even thinking of a way you might be able to get a drill bit through there to drill it out. Feels like you would have to remove the radiator (and grill if you haven't already) in order to go straight at the bolt.
I had several exhaust manifold bolts break off, including the one closest to the fire wall, and had to drill them all out, so it's possible if you have a straight shot to the bolt. It's not exactly like the issue you're facing, but you can read my post Exhaust Manifold Bolt Removal - Am I Screwed?? to get an idea on the process if you get to this point. Hope to god you don't, my friend. Either way, take the entire pump off if you haven't already and check to see if you can grab on to any part of the broken bolt before doing anything else.
By the looks of what is in his hand, it looks like the bolt is broken off inside the block.
Based on your verbiage, Clifford, you should consider taking it to a pro
Again.... Sir put down the drill and back away... Lol!
I would go HummerZ's route first.
I'm leaving that to someone with more experience, the issue I'm having now is finding a replacement bolt. The only part number I've found (52884DK) aren't even close to matching. Can you buy universal bolts at autozone or something similar in size at home depot?
