I just replaced my t-stat, I had the factory style spring clamp on my lower hose. You may have to remove the driver's side fender well that is held in with plastic clips. It's a pain, but only way I had access to it was removing the wheel well . Good luck, it's a terrible design, but once removed you can get to it.

We ended up removing the alternator, idler pulley and getting to it, we looked at the inner fender and in the end I think that might have been a better way.

Inner fender wheel house liner comes out in 10 minutes or less once the wheel is off. Then can use hose clamp pliers to slip clamp off the t-stat neck, and then remove hose. If in doubt about your t-stat this would be the time to replace it while the liner is out.

H3s and most GM vehicles use a spring wire coolant hose clamp

All you need is a hose clamp pliers. No need to remove anything accept the front splash guard (a/k/a skid plate). Apply the pliers in lock on the hose clamp, pull the lower hose of the lower radiator inlet. You do not need to remove the hose from the T stat hosing until after you have removed it from the block.

It does make it easier if the inner fender is removed.

Done it at least 4 times, takes like 3-4 minutes.
