Default HVAC Headunit control swap

Has anyone ever looked into swapping the ac/heater control head unit with a different version? I don’t mean another H3 unit but something different all together, maybe a newer Silverado/yukon or even Colorado unit? Have a project in mind and trying to consider options.

I don't know if any would be a direct swap with the needed connectors, but as long as you were to use another manual control with all of the same features, it is doable. Sourcing the wiring diagrams for both models will help identify how to modify the wiring. You will also need the pigtail from the donor vehicle.
I have done this many times with Ford Superduty trucks.

Here is the wiring diagram from a 2007 H3 to get you started.

Why try and replace with a different vehicle HVAC control?
Is your OEM HVAC control faulty?

I appreciate that. I've been looking those over and comparing them to other units out there trying to see which might be the simplest swap. I'd love to go to the digital version in '15+ colorado/silverado/tahoe however i see it has it's own module as well as needing other sensors and misc items installed for it to actually work.

Not technically faulty currently, most just glitchy. It is having issues with the blower speed like so many others have and the light bulbs are mostly burned out but the reason for the inquisition is mostly as part of a possible project where I need another inch or so below the radio so looking for other possible options.

I'm guessing you're gonna run into twisted pair such as Lin, Wan, Lan hi/low bus etc. Names might be different but similar theory. Alot of newer products use totally different architecture and topologies.

Manual controls will definitely be the easiest.

Climate control units will require CAN controlled sensors and modules. Not impossible, but will require you to install the entire network chain for what you are trying to install.

It will ultimately come down to how much work you are willing to do.

yeah, that's what it's looking like. lots of Lin/Lan communication lines, even in the manual controls

thank yall for the help. i'll likely just end up relocating the hvac control to either lower in the bezel or possibly an overhead console if i can ever find some measurements for one

Is this an easy 'plug & go ' installation?
