The head of this bolt is 15mm, and a 3/8 socket will be needed (don't think a 1/2 will fit), but should be fine.

@Doc Olds , I'm not sure if my bolts are not original, but the heads are definitely 10mm on my truck (2007 post transfer case fluid fill update).

@Justinh , a normal bolt head on a 10mm thread would not be 10mm, but these seem to be special bolts. The head is definitely the same size as the threads. I can only guess that was to give a bit more room to remove the bolts.

I believe the problem with my bolts has been the number of times I have had them out (CV replacement twice, trans fluid x3, and now a transfer case replacement, so 6 times), plus the fact that it is a 10mm hex head on the torque of a 10mm bolt (51 ft-lbs), they got rounded off. They are not beyond being used, but I don't want to get into a position of not being able to get them off in the future, and I like to stay ahead of stuff like this. I'm sure I wasn't perfect each and every time with the sockets, but I also was not being stupid with it either. So, I will replace them with easily obtained regular bolts instead of the $10/pc GM bolts.

I appreciate the input from everyone, and hope this can help someone in the future.

Are those hardened class 10.9?

They are indeed 10.9. However, this was just the test fit bolt, and I did order the bolts (cheaper) from the link provided by you actually.

Yes, originals GM Part # 11589056 had a 10mm hex head. Just make sure replacements are at least 10.9. Also add some Locktite threadlocker and tighten properly secured.

100% Agree. A good reminder for others coming across this thread.

The bolts always get locktite on them when replaced, and torqued properly:
CV joint bolts: 51 ft-lbs*
U-joint bolts: 18 ft-lbs
*Note that the Schwarttzy tech page for the front prop shaft has a typo and lists the CV joint torque at "541 ft-lbs" - the proper torque is indeed 51 ft*lbs

looks like the origional bolts come with orange loctite.
orange loctight has the holding streanth of red but is removable like blue.
red you have heat to 700c to break the bond.

Did not know there was an orange locktite - I figured it might just be a different brand. I have been using blue, and although haven't had issues, I will be looking into the orange. Always learning something new! Thanks for the info!
