I meant how did you come up with the idea that they ONLY last 20 years, give or take. Extremely rare for them to fail, and as Hummerz says, the airbags don't "go off" if a sensor fails, they simply don't go off at all if they're needed. But hey, if you want to start replacing parts that are still working just because of age...have at it! EVERY part on the H3 meets that criteria, so I hope you have deep pockets. My DD is a '95 Toyota Tercel; 30 years old. I don't make a habit of replacing good parts because of age.

I can't remember what problem I was trying to fix on my 2005 Yukon Denali XL, but I dumped hot coolant all over one of the sensors. I fixed the cooling problem, but then I had a Service Airbag message. I immediately knew what happened. I Changed the front sensor, and the message went away. It was an expensive oversight, but still way cheaper than taking the car to the dealer or even mom-and-pop shop. It was part of the cost of my continuing automotive education -- and I'll admit that I've done much worse.

They have to be waterproof because of where they are, but I found out they aren't hot glycol proof.

 

So yours didn't "fail"; you damaged it. Significant difference.

 

I dont replace good parts either, my front sensor is bad. The plastic is cracked probably due to the age of the plastic and vibration. So I am replacing it, I wanted a new one but they are discontinued. So having to buy one that is already almost 20 years (used part) old has me wondering how long before it breaks. Turns out both of mine the plastic is cracked. So now i will be looking to buy another one for when it fails.
