DIY Transmission pan drop filter change. Any tips?
Hey Folks,
So considering doing a transmission filter change. In my driveway. Or garage.
Any suggestions or tips. Will be doing it up on drive up ramps if I go ahead. I have a H3 with the 3.5 on a 2006 model. I do my own oil changes and have done the half assed trans fluid suck outs every 50K.
Thanks for your consideration...

@Alpha X did you do anything special to keep the plug from leaking (at the pan or at the plug)? I've had trouble with these before.
@wpage suck out as much fluid as you can first. Although the job is easier if you remove the front prop shaft, it can be done w/o removing it.
What type of pump and tube do you use to suck out fluid?

Thanks for the feedback guys. Not looking to add a plug. This is not something for my needs that I do often. ( Almost 20 years and just getting around to changing the filter.)
Since Im not big on gaskets and pans and alterations. Just looking to see if I sould do this in the house or out source. To the pros. I am technically competent but not looking to get a leak after messing with this.
I have gasket seal and not apposed to getting some hot fluid on my self and floor. Wondering what tips from some who have done this as like... Side wind the drop on the pan etc...
Thanks!

DIY, so you know it's done right!
First add a can of Trans Tune then drive a couple hundred miles.
GET A QUALITY FILTER GASKET KIT!
Thoroughly clean both transmission housing & pan surfaces also replace the filter seal!
Reinstall the pan with gasket properly secured in place, install the bolts hand tight all around the pan then properly torque the bolts.
Fill with DexVI start run to operating temperature while checking fluid level also check for leaks at the pan gasket- Check torque at the pan bolts when heated which only needs 9-12ft.lbs.MAX (DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN).

Until the part about dropping the drive shaft it looked like something I could do... Going to have to think about this project. Thanks for sharing !
Make sure to get the AT Change kit that has the H3/H3T only filter. A standard 4L60E filter doesn't work with the specialty shaped H3/H3T Trans pan. Likely you already knew that, but for others they should pay attention to what parts they get for this simple job.
