Default Access to timing chain??

Does the head need to be removed to change timing chain?

No, just the Front Cover and the Camshaft Cover... and everything in their way.

You will also need two GM specialty tools: A Camshaft holder and Angle Meter.

interesting...lady at service dept who communicates witth the mechanics, said the head needs to be removed
