Default Unknown Driver Issue

hello all, i’ve recently been having an issue with unknown driver. here’s some insight

1. since i’ve owned it the key fob has never been useable, replaced battery on key fob and still hasn’t worked.

2. abs, traction control, and brake light has been coming on and off since i hit a decent size pothole at 65 on the highway.

3. i’ve had battery tested and had 12.8 volts not running.

4. it’s been a hit or miss with the unknown driver every now and then, it would always just fix itself during driving.

5. radio is stock.

6. radio, AC, stereo, windows, electric door lock, heated seats and dash light dimmer are not working

im trying to figure out what could be causing this, i've cleaned and tightened all of my grounds to no avail. it’s been hard trying to diagnose this bc im a handy man myself on a tight budget and dont really want to be forced to take it to a dealer. i’ve also noticed that my highbeam light isn’t coming on either. i have a scanner but not one that can do all the fancy stuff. i just did a radiator replacement recently and had not thoroughly put the lower oil cooler line in and had it blow oil all over the driver side of the frame. yes i did clean the ABS ground under driver door. this is giving me a headache as i have to make a long drive everyday to work and not being able to roll down my windows or use my AC has been killing me. thank you for anyone’s advice who can help me in figuring out this issue!

i beleive they share a ground near the hood release. might be behind the kick panel. but you can double check that in a wiring diagram.
if your getting water down the a pillar maybe the ground connector is oxidized.
also check your engine to frame / body ground straps for corrossion.

yeah i went through and check all my body grounds. all were good beside my front one by the bumper. i had an oil cooler line pop off and spray oil down into it and had some oil on the surface i cleaned that up and still have the same issue. i was doing some driving today and it since has fixed itself, but the coolant temp gauge isn’t working, is it possible that sensor could be causing it to have the issue?

i was referring to the ground point inside the vehicle. in the vicinity of the drivers kick panel area.

it could be the sensor or it could be a bad stepper motor in the cluster or wiring from the sensor.

gonna give this a check in the AM, it went away and then shut the truck off and turned it back on and boom unknown driver again. i did noticed a bit of water on the carpet under the floor matt’s.

Default Water intrusion - Damp Rid

sounds like you are dealing with a lot, and water intrusion is common and likely not helping your situation.

I live by hanging a bag of Damp Rid in my truck to handle any moisture and prevent mold and mildew.

Definitely make sure your clearance and market lights have good gaskets. If not, everyone here will recommend replacing at minimum. I also run a bead of silicone on the body side of mine too. When it’s time to change them I use soft plastic tools to remove the old silicone and mineral spirits.

Default Still unknown

a bit of an update here, i’ve not used it will come back out of “unknown driver” after climbing some hills and the trans temp getting warmer than usual. could something with the transmission be giving me an issue?

what model year is it?

1. since i’ve owned it the key fob has never been useable, replaced battery on key fob and still hasn’t worked.
  • The key-fob receiver is part of the PDM so this module needs to be operational.
  • Could be the key fob, new ones are available on eBay and fairly cheap, need to re-teach

2. abs, traction control, and brake light has been coming on and off since i hit a decent size pothole at 65 on the highway.
  • this suggests a loose contact/connector/ground, there are two grounds connected to the EBCM:
    • G300 - Left side of body mount in front of driver door.
    • G308 - Right frame body mount near right rear door.
  • could possibly be a bad contact in the EBCM, disconnect the battery, unplug the EBCM 3-Way connector, inspect and clean with IPA based contact cleaner (not WD40)

3. i’ve had battery tested and had 12.8 volts not running.
  • battery voltage reading alone is misleading, it only indicates state of charge (SOC) and not state of health (SOH) for example a 12V flashlight battery may read 12.8V but will never start a Hummer, so a poor SOH indicates poor/low capacity.
  • dirty/corroded or loose battery terminals and wires

4. it’s been a hit or miss with the unknown driver every now and then, it would always just fix itself during driving.
like tooth decay, intermittent issues seldom go away on their own unless there's something is drying-out or something has been changed, always hard to diagnose when working.
5. radio is stock.

6. radio, AC, stereo, windows, electric door lock, heated seats and dash light dimmer are not working
these are all quite major issues:-
  • heated seats, door lock and windows suggest an issue with the DDM, either it's not connected to the Class2 Serial bus or it has failed.
  • the A/C not working also suggests and issue with Class2 Serial bus, good place to start is Splice Pack 205 on left side of dash near footwell, has any water got in the area?
  • radio also connects to the Class2 Serial bus.
has any aftermarket equipment been connected?
Something on the Serial bus could be corrupting communications, SP205 has removeable links so each item can be isolated.
If the air suspension unit has been removed, check its 6-Way IP connector has been sealed-up, the Serial Bus goes there and could be shorting out with salt and water from the roads

attached pdf is all the grounds.

Default Thanks Ocean

it is a 2003 sport utility.

im gonna grab replacement batteries for it tomorrow, dont think they’ll fix it but gonna give it a shot.

i checked both of those body grounds and cleaned them up and made sure to tighten them good and im still getting the same issue.

Where exactly is the EBCM located so i can try and pull that and check for corrosion. on another note of that topic, i did repaint the rear bumper and had unplugged the trailer harness could that be causing my issue aswell? i’m gonna plug it back in tomorrow as see but wondering if that isn’t my issue.

i’m also gonna try a different battery and see if that helps my issue or not.

the only aftermarket objects i’ve installed are new LED’s all around including headlights, markers, i left the turn signals alone, and the cab lights.

all the items i listed that don’t work worked previous to this unknown driver issue, all besides the heated seats that never worked when i got it.

where would that 6 way IP connector be to check that aswell? it has been removed i know that, just never really went looking for it.

thanka for the reply gonna give these a check and see where it leads me.
