hi there, lost alot of power near home sounded like a couple cylinders missing and a loud exhaust, however.. when I arrive home and put it in park, it isnt in park, had to put a rock behind the wheels and dash says it is in reverse and pretty sure trans was smoking when I stopped, fluid smells ok, oil in engine looks clean,no white stuff in cap. so... what do you all think? need a starting point. Thinking trans but doesnt explain loud exhaust..
check the range selector arm on the transmission. the plastic bushing degrades and the shift cable comes off the arm. very common issue with GM's. i had this issue.doorman sells a plastic bushing the part number is 14055 GM shift linkage bushing. you might find it in your local autoparts help section

will do in the morning, can't press in the shifter button either.
found it all today, the engine was the injector power distribution plug, somehow came loose. plugged it power restored, trans issue you were on rarget, the ribbed cable cover has come off ,rotted away, I can hand put the trans in any gear I want, shift cable need replaced. Would you have any idea of time involved to change? Thanks for the advise!
its not to bad to replace the shift cable you do have to open the center counsel to get to the other end attached to the shifter... then just follow the cable to the transmission. but in my case i also had to replace the lever on the transmission. the rod pin had also rotted to the point the new shift cable would still not lock on. the transmission range selector lever is gm part number 15082892 incase you need it.
but i did wind up sheering the nut off that holds that arm onto the transmission as it was seized on. rust penetrant or fire did not make it budge and required to open the transmission to replace the control lever cross shaft / gear shift shaft. the part was like 12 bucks but cost me 500 for a shop to replace it. its not a hard job but i did not have the part, space or the time to do it. much easier on a lift then on my back in my driveway.
Wow! That was a pain to have to replace that too! sorry man! I am hoping to take out the top of gthe center console alone for access, it is missing clips anyway and I have them now so can do those on reassembly, Cant tell you how happy I was that it all was simple stuff. Orders the cable tonight, get here thursday so next weekend for install.
