Sunroof Issues
Hey guys, tried the search feature but nothing matches exactly.
for all intents and purposes, my sunroof motor appears to be working just fine, when I press the button, I hear it click, and move, both directions, BT the sunroof itself doesn’t move at all. I’ve taken off the cover, and I can see a little wheel spin left and right, but only about an eighth of an inch.
it seems to potentially be binding somehow? Even with some assistance, the sunroof will not move at all. Anyone experienced this? I assume it’s going to involve me taking off the headliner isn’t it…

Yes..... quite likely the cables are disintegrated though. If so there is no fix, the cables were never available as a separate part, nor is the entire frame assembly still available new. Unfortunate but it is what it is. I've had mine totally out and dissembled and yes, that is a big project.
Stupid design - the cables that drive the window have a plastic tooth covering molded onto them which is what the gear on the motor drives. Eventually that plastic tooth covering on the cables wears down or starts to disintegrate. The only replacement was the entire inner frame and track assembly.
Most common is the cables just start failing in one place and it starts failing to close and you can assist it by hand to close. However if you can see the gear spinning on the motor and the roof does not move then the teeth on the cables are worn off right there.

As MixmanSC has said (and confirmed by myself who has been down the same road with my old 06 sunroof) Bottom line if you still want the sunroof to work you gonna need a total unit replacement.
Forget finding a new rack assembly, after much digging I did find one back a few year ago but they wanted a kings ransom for it. About the best thing you can hope for is a good used unit.
Here's one listed on fleebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/25613085150...ntid=101719768
If you go this route be prepared for a expensive big job, make sure you get some guarantees on the used part from the salvage yard. It would really suck to buy a used unit that has the same or other problems. Best of luck with the project.
That's is what I ended up doing but I was successful in the end.
