Curious what the purpose of the additional plastic tubes (see pic) are for? Is this just to keep hands out of the fan blades? Can't imagine it has a purpose as part of the air intake. TIA

The fan-shroud assembly is an important component of the cooling system. While the fan is responsible for drawing in air, the fan shroud's job is to ensure uniform air distribution to the radiator core. By assisting airflow in the engine compartment the fan shroud helps in dismissing excess heat from the engine.

So they are internally connected to the air stream? I didn't realize they were internally chambered, just figured hand guard, and now per above the fan shroud. Which probably explains in part why those after market intake systems are "louder".
