New transfer case!
Hello,
On my 2006 H2, there had been a mechanical sound when the car was under some strain, e.g. taking off up hill. One mechanic thought it was the transfer case chain. Another mechanic has now removed the transfer case and says it needs replacement in whole. Said there had been very little oil that came off it. The transfer case is BW4484. I don't see a lot (actually none) sold online. Where would one go to buy this?
thanks,
e

But, I would want to see the internals before condemning the whole case. What color was the fluid? Is the case cracked? They are SUPER easy to rebuild. In college I would build them on my coffee table while i watched TV.
Mine was bad to the point of needing to replace the rear half case and a few internals. It was still cheaper than a whole other replacement. Although i did rebuild it myself. But still i would seek a second opinion.
When you had your wife in the truck was it in 4hi open or 4hi lock? The h2 is not awd, it is full time 4wd with center locker. Slightly different setups.
I suspect that the transfer case was in the normal 4hi open when you tried to get your wife to move it. Meaning all of the power was transferred to the unloaded front due to the differential gears in the t case. This is normal operation.
If it was in 4hi lock when this happened I would suspect you have an issue with a dash switch, encoder, t case shift motor or shift fork(common on these). This may also cause binding or skipping of the front wheels on dry surfaces if it’s stuck in 4hi lock as the truck still wants to drive straight.
I don’t think your transfer case is blown though. I also don’t think you would be able to tell if the front was pulling more than the rear because this simply cannot happen due to the design of the transfer case even if it was broken.
I would make sure the truck shifts through all the modes(4hi 4hi lock and 4lo lock) ensure the indicators stop blinking and go solid with each one. if it does, I wouldn’t worry about anything else.
Sometimes it can be finicky and put the service 4x4 message on the dash if the t case hasn’t been shifted in a long time. If this happens turn the truck off, open and close the driver door, lock it, wait a minute, unlock, open and close, then restart the truck. Cycle between 4hi and 4hi lock 20-30 times ensuring that the light stops blinking and goes solid every time. Then try cycling to 4lo and back again. Remember the truck must be in neutral to shift to 4lo not park.
