Default New Sunroof Motor Crazy Issue

Hello, I have a 2005 Hummer H2. I vented my sunroof the other day and when I went back to close it, it got stuck in that position. The motor will only work to vent the sunroof but will not go back. I don't even hear a click when trying to close the venting position. I checked both fuses and both are ok. I think the most confusing part is, I purchased a brand new motor and it wont even power on to do anything at all. The old motor would at least turn counter clockwise but the NEW motor wont do anything. I checked the harness with a 12V multimeter at the connection and it's getting 12V power when I open and close. However, it is not communicating with the motor BUT when I plug in the old one it powers it one way. My Hummer is at the dealership and they can't seem to find out what is going on and escalated this to GM Master Tech hotline. I was given a reset procedure but its not even doing anything to to do that. It's almost like its the sunroof relay/power is not recognizing a motor is plugged in. Anyone heard of this issue? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Thank you for this. It’s at the dealership right now and they said they checked the fuses/relay and it’s working. They just can’t seem to figure out why the brand new motor is not turning, but the old motor is turning one way. If they don’t figure it out, I will check it again with this schematics. Thanks again!

The scary thing is, the dealership said they have never seen anything like this and had to escalate it. Wow! Lol

Yeah I bet the "dealer" had never seen anything like it and had to escalate the amount of cabbage to remove from your wallet to continue to be mystified.

I would never, ever under any circumstances take 19 year old out of warranty vehicle to a dealership. The techs there work based upon book rates doing warranty work which is basically throwing parts at problems identified by a scanner or manual. Actual diagnosis is rare. Did any of them actually test the replacement motor with an independent 12V supply? New parts can still be bad.

Good luck.

You are 100% correct. Dealers do not know how to fix anything without a scanner. I actually told him to stop all work and I am picking it up today. Taking it to an actual sunroof shop who just deals strictly with stuck sunroof. He said I don’t even need a motor that he could work on the tracks.

There is nothing to fix on the tracks.... it is cable driven and the cables have a molded plastic cover that is molded to the shape of teeth that mesh with the motor gear. As these age that molded plastic cover degrades and starts to crumble. There is no replacement cables, the only fix is to replace the entire sunroof frame assembly and then its with one that is nearly as old. I've had the entire frame assembly out and apart and even determined the actual manufacturer and there is nothing available.

So what will eventually happen if you get the motor itself working right is that molded plastic on the cables will start to fail. The most common failure on that is it will fail to close when in the sliding mode and you have to assist it by hand back closed (has the most resistance on closing from slide open as that uses the longest length of the drive cables). Tilt function will still usually work fine though.

Thanks for the info. I got the sunroof looked at. The shop said the sunroof motor will not power on and move anything since it may not be for my specific year. There are 4 wires coming out of the connector for my 2005 Hummer and the motor is setup for needing 5 wires? He said the motor must be correct for my specific VIN. When i searched for the correct part number for my VIN, it came up my GM part number 15781626. It does not appear there are any other part numbers for sunroof motors for H2's? I have had 3 shops look at this with no concrete answers. All electronics have been tested on the Hummer and they all work. They just won't power a new motor but will power my old one in one direction. All of these shops said they have never seen anything like it. I am going to have to live without a sunroof I guess.
