Default Emergency Parking Brake slow release

Tried searching and I'm sure it's on the forum somewhere, but I can't find it.

The foot operated pedal returns very slowly, I'm confident it's the mechanism and not the cables as I can see the cable-tension release but the mechanism appears to be sticking.

Have to say the mechanism looks a little rusty from age, this is what it looks like on an eBay part not mine:-

I'm trying to get through a vehicle test and it will fail on this issue.

Any tips or suggestions much appreciated - Thank you 👍🙏

did you try lubricating it maybe the pedal bushings gummed up.

Definitely get it lubricated. Wouldn't hurt to lube the cable as well. My cable had a lot of resistance last year, took it off and held it vertical and let penetrating oil go down the length. Work like new after that.

Working on the lube, no luck yet, will keep trying, access is a little restricted.

Thanks for your valued suggestions👍

I usually see the rear cables as the cause, rust will form at the lowest point in the cable curve, try and get some good lube in the rear cables.

i had to replace my passenger rear emergency cable. it had a rub spot on the housing that allowed moisture into the cable and caused binding. the lever inside the rear brake housing that the cable attatches too also needed some lube. it was a bit bound up from no use as well.

Again thanks for all your comments and suggestions.

It's a bit weird, to prove it's the rear cables issue I pulled on but externally but it made no difference. Theres a few degrees of pedal travel before the main cable engages, it's this movement where it struggles to return, like the return spring is weak or the mechanism is sticking.

I've lubed-up where I can access but it's still the same.

Possibilities:-
  • The main pedal cable has stretched
  • Mechanism is sticking
  • Return spring has stretched or gone weak
  • Rear cables not returning, but doesn't seem to be the case.
Is there any adjustment in the mechanism?

My gut tells me to remove the mechanism and try to fix it or replace it as painful a process that may be, possibly replacing all the cables as well.

Any info on that 1st bit of movement for comparison would be helpful 🙏

@bronxteck
Interestingly that your info on the "Park Brake Pedal Adjustment" was missing in my manual, like it's been erased🤔

The above additional information I found on-line, but its hard to fathom how the "automatic adjuster" works, essentially there's too much play in the pedal before the cable engages.

One would imagine the cable should start to pull the moment the pedal is pressed or fairly close to it, but if someone could confirm this it would be a great help.

A while ago I had a rear brake cable snap resulting in the pedal going all the way down, to get home I had to lift the pedal back manually, perhaps this caused the loss of adjustment?

Looking at the above info, it looks like pulling on the front cable should somehow cause the adjuster to "ratchet back" to take up any excess travel, however its not clear how to do this.

Again if anyone has any experience and could let me know the procedure it would be very much appreciated 🙏
