Default Advice on preventing further rust

I picked up this 2006 H2 right around new years and I haven’t done any undercoating yet cause I wanted the salt to be washed off the roads first so can properly clean the frame before undercoating. I have now pressure washed the inside of the frame rails and I regularly under carriage washed it for the last 6 months. These are the worst sections on the frame the body is otherwise clean.

This vehicle has spent its entire life in the rust belt starting in NJ then to PA and it’s been in Ontario since 2009. It has been winter stored since 2013 which left it in decent shape for its age in the rust belt. I’m now trying to decide where to go from here.
  1. Should I wire brush the rougher sections of the frame then hit them with rust converter and undercarriage paint? Im scared of trapping the rust by doing this
  2. Should I just undercoat on top of existing.
  3. Also what undercoatings do you recommend? I’m leaning towards lanolin wool wax black as I’ve had bad experience with just crown oil spray in the past
I’ve never owned something 20 years old before so all input and opinions are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

First remove the loose rust! A
needle scaler needle scaler
removes it quick for me!

BTW, most undercoatings allows moisture intrusion.

Here's my go to:

Use rust bullet metal blast, then rust bullet paint, then start getting it crown oiled or some kind of oil coating every year

If you just have a few spots and need to remove the rust - I highly recommend Boeshield RustFree from Boeing… you can imagine they know what they are doing. it gets you back to bare metal - a bit magical honestly…

if you have a part or bolt you want to remove the rust from, get a jug of EvapoRust. Leave the part to soak overnight and all the rust is gone in the morning.

Once the underlying rust is gone, then you can worry about protection …

Eastwood products are available on Amazon and get great reviews for this… they have a whole kit including the wire brushes…

I kinda do rust prevention as a side hustle - what I do is pressure wash - then let it dry - then ospho - then pressure wash - then Eastwoods encapsulator plus- then simple to get to areas I spray bedliner( on the frame and floor bottoms - inside the frame I spray Eastwoods encapsulator ( but me personally I dont like their internal frame coating ) so I use their encapsulator where it reaches - then when dry I use a spray bomb and or start surface shield yearly - this includes encapsulator inside the doors- floors all inside panels and spray hard to reach areas with the surface shield - Yes it takes e a few days - I also owe a deuce and a half- its dont the same way but on a much larger scale . I just got my H2 and starting a complete disassembly of any area rust can start ..- all carpets , all panels removed and treated

@Hummthere - When you use the Eastwood encapsulator - which I agree is probably the best product on the market - do you remove all surface rust first even though technically you don't have to? Do you remove rust with a product - if so which? Or do it old school with a wire brush?
