Default AC Teperature

So AC/Heat fan, temp setting all seem to work. AC blows cold, but only at speeds above idle. Live in FL, and if you start off in a warm/hot interior it cools down as long as traffic is moving. But sitting at idle at a light it seems as tho the air isn't quite as cold coming out the vent as when running at speed. Wondering if this would be a low freon condition, or possibly a belt tension or some other issue?

Do you have a probe thermometer? Insert into the center dash vent, max a/c on idling in park, and get your garden hose spray nozzle and spray water into the condenser. Does the temp drop at the vent & what's the temp reading?

OK. I'll give it a try.

Top few issues that could cause this;
Low air flow across the condenser
Low refrigerant lvl
Compressor efficiency loss

Have you done any AC work recently?
Have you done any work in the radiator area recently?

Low air flow,
  • check the radiator fan clutch
  • check for blockage
Low refrigerant lvl
  • Need operating pressures to diagnose
  • look at all fittings/connections on the suction/discharge hoses/pipes for oil seepage (possible leak)
Compressor efficiency
  • usually shows up at idle
  • pressures will tell the story
Need ambient temps and system pressures to get a better idea of possible issues.

All good inf, thank you. Yes, brand new GM OEM radiator replaced 2 months ago. Didn't notice any evidence of leakage at joints, but as stated I will need to have it checked with gauges to determine compressor/system. So will be a few days before I can get back to getting Temps of ambient & duct outlet with probe at idle & operational speeds. One thing I have noticed lately is what seems to be a marked increase of engine "roar", esp at take off, which could be the fan clutch has gone bad. Coolant/tranny Temps are staying pretty normal. Will let all of you folks know what I find later this week.

Fan clutch fully engaged can cause a "roar". Few days to check vent temp? How do you check temp when cooking? Any probe thermometer will work!

My vehicle has the “roar” when stone cold for the first 2 blocks. Not sure if the fan is ON or OFF at that point.
