I don't have any pics, but I do my oil changes also. GM put the oil filter in a lovely place when you unscrew the filter the oil leaks all over the a part of the frame. I know what your thinking, duh, but GM came up with a little saucer type dish with a spout on it to guide the dirty oil off the frame to the ground. One thing that I found that because my 06 H3 is so high off the ground I don't need a jack to crawl underneath it to do any of the work of changing the oil. I run 5w30 full synthetic castrol syntec. My brother in law who has been around motorcycles, cars for 20+ years suggested this because he really keeps up on the changing world of oil. He also runs this same type in his 2001 Cobra Mustang SVT, so it's gotta be good stuff, but then again it's all preference, because on my 1985 dodge 600 convertable I run 5w30 mobil one 5000 mile. I feel that the 3000 mile rule is starting to become out of date. Many oil changing places and dealerships won't change your oil until 5000 miles, because it just doesn't need it, and if you look at the dipstick it really seems like the oil is dirty looking or even smells burnt. I did some detective work online and found that alot about oil and changing it often vs. waiting, do a youtube search on synthetic oil, I learned alot from that. If oil isin't changed that often what about rotating your tires every 3000 or 5000 or 7500 miles? that's a good question also?

why use 0w-30 when the manual says to use 5w-30 SAE?

Before removing the oil filter I punch a hole in the bottom with an awl to allow it to drain completely before I remove it. It's much much uch less messy this way!!!

Hi guys, I bought my Hummer H3 with 39k miles on it and not it's 43k miles just had my oil change from a local shop. I'm hoping of doing it on it's 46k miles since I already know how and made sure to watch the local shop did the same thing on this thread. Now what kind of Oil and filter do you guys recommend? I've seen that alot of you used mobil 1 for the oil but how about for the filter?

Thanks in advance!

I use Rotella T 5W-40 synthetic oil in every engine I own. The oil has tons of additives. I use Purolator PureOne filters on everything that takes filters. On car, motorcycle, Truck or Suv's I change every 6000 miles or 6 months. Small engines go 1 year of light use. 1 truck 130,000, 2 cars over 100,000 miles and they still sound perfect. Never had a small enigine problem. Motorcycle has 64,000 miles, never needed a valve adjustment.

Hey Guys, I have a tip to add to this very well done post that many people have taken time to thank me after they tried it.

After you drain your oil, before you put the plug back in the pan pour a quart of oil in from the top and let it drain completely out. "Why?" you say? Watch the oil come out the bottom and you will see! I think this easy, semi-flush is worth the cost of a quart of oil.

One reason to look at a high quality oil is that the I5 is a hot running engine. A high quality conventional oil or a high quality synthetic would be great. Follow a good routine of changing and I think you will be fine. The OLM is what GM recommends; more frequent would not hurt, IMHO.

The Rotella is a fine oil with a substantial additive pack; designed for dirty diesels so in a gasoline internal combustion engine it is a good oil.

Cheers, Doug
