As I understand it, the threads stretch on installation. The new nuts will also not be perfectly round and this functions to keep the nut in place once it is installed. I got lucky and a local auto parts store had some in stock when I replaced mine. If I was in a pinch to get it done, I would probably chance re-using the old nuts just making sure to check the torque on the nuts at the next few oil changes to ease my mind.
