In the winter... 20s vs stock 16s... question about driveability
Hey guys, about to pick up an 07 H3... now I want to put 20" KMC Monsters on it...
Here is my question... should I for the winter put on the stock 16s or can I leave the 20s? I live in the Northeast (North NJ/drives to Adirondacks occasionally)
The H3 has really big allowance and 20s look almost small on it
So will the 16s do better in snow over the 20s or will it not be that much of a difference?
Thanks,
Mike

ive got 20 inch monsters on mine, but i live in Texas so i dont drive through snow. BUT i do know the rims will resist the salt on the road, but thats about your only worries. I drive on the beach all the time with mine and go romping through the dunes. Im also running some 33" nitto dune grapplers. they help alot. havent had a single problem with rust or corosion
dont go bigger than a 20 inch rim....its a hummer not a caddy. you need room for tire.

The diameter of the rim shouldn't make much difference. The width is important for traction in snow. Narrow is better. Try to keep the overall diameter the same. If you increase the diameter you will compromise HP, acceleration, MPG and braking. To do this you have to go to low profile tires in order to keep the diameter the same. With that said, say good-bye to ride quality!

I think an aggressive A/T tread design would help too.

So for the 20" KMC's what size tire would you guys recommend for an all season - all around tire?
on superbuytires.com they suggest 285/50/20 (based on their tool that asks you to plug in the vehicle)
but for the wheels on tirerack.com they suggest 275/55/20
and another place said i can even do a 305/50/20
so which would be better for daily use driving in all conditions? (and better in snow if I did use this in the winter)?

This is just a guess on my part but the 275's should provide the best all year round handling compromise. I'd ask Discount Tire.com or Tire Rack for their tire recommendations.
Stabilitrac will also help you stay in control as long as you drive safely according to conditions.
