wHEELS & RIMS
I know some have gone with as large as 37" but I think those will rub some at full turn. I think 35" is probably a safe bet without a lift kit. On the wheels the larger you go the worse it will ride. If you want giant wheels with 35" rubber band tires every bump will be a hard bang and it will not be very great offroad without any sidewall give. Personally I'd go with 17 or 18 inch wheels but I like the much better ride that more sidewall gives. I know that goes against what is trendy though. Then again mine came with black rockstar wheels. One of the very first things I did was change out to some chrome wheels. Just saying, I'm not much on doing what everyone else does. Nowadays around here, it seems like 75% of trucks and SUV's have black wheels...

^agreed.
I would personally stick with the 17" stock wheel size. As mentioned, some have fit 37s on stock components without issues and others have rubbed. My stock 35s rubbed on the driver side at full lock with stock BFGs. Of course that was before doing a key lift, higher offset wheels, different tires, etc.

When i bought my h2. I got rid of the 17" wheels and went to 20". I absolutely hate the h2 turbine style rims. The tires i put on were 35 x12.50 x20. I like the way it updates the truck and doesnt look like an elephant on a peanut. The ride does become a bit stiffer without the sidewall. I have wheeled it with toyo open country at2 and they are **** poor for wheeling and forget about airing down or your rim will get trashed. Next set i am either going with 18's on 35 or 37 m/ts.good luck, its a hard decision with so many variables and options. One thing to pay attention to is tire weight. I noticed my mileage drop right away after the swap.
True that. Three factors come into play...
Weight of the wheels - generally far more expensive but forged wheels tend to be quite a bit lighter as are wheels with a lot more openings. Of course larger wheels will generally be heavier than smaller wheels.
Weight of the tires - surprisingly a pretty wide variation between brands and styles in the same sizes.
Size of the tires (and to a small extent the tread pattern). Go bigger and get worse economy around town but can get a slight gain on the interstates. Also will have less power off the line (and a bit more strain on the transmission to get moving).

Enough said......
I remember back in the day running 15" wheels with 37" rubber. Sidewall is a necessity, not an eyesore.
it also felt like we were driving around on beach *****.. haha. My cj is running 35x15x15.50. Swamper tsl .Handling is not its strong suit. The 15's are getting hard to come by.
Reminds me of the last time we went up to Hatteras. You can drive on the beach there (have a pay and get a permit nowadays) and at least 3 different points I saw a truck (4wd) with giant wheels and rubber band tires stuck yet everyone else with smaller wheels and running around with 15psi of air in their tires had zero problems in the deep fluffy sand. I'm honestly not sure why more sidewall would make as much of a difference in the sand but that is what I saw. Maybe they just could not air down because they were worried about trashing their expensive wheels?? Because realistically, when you go there, you just leave your tires aired down for the entire time you are there, even when on the roads. You are not going to be going much over 35 mph anywhere around there anyways. Rides and drives like a 1960 Cadillac then... kinda vague and mushy. lol
