Got a 2-in-1 post...
1) The noise: A reverberating noise (similar to a loose heat shield) has developed. It most often happens just before I come to a stop, and lasts 1-2 seconds. It sounds like it is on the passenger side in the dash area. It can be continuous while stopped in reverse if the engine is cold. It is tinny or plastic-y. Any ideas - common things to look for?

2) The thing: While I was looking for suspects for the noise, I was looking behind the dash in the glove box opening to the right. There is a metallic (?) looking box (maybe 3" sq x 1" thick) snapped into a large plastic bracket just below the (rear-facing) air vent. The bracket covers most of the box from the glove box direction. Any ideas what this thing is?

I found the noise. I looked in the engine compartment for anything that could rattle near the firewall and found the brake fluid tube and a controller above the ECM. After stabilizing both the noise stopped. But I can't tell which was the culprit because I undid my work and the noise has not returned.

Any idea what the controller/computer above the ECM is?

 

some of the later years had a TCM, but not sure where it is located

 

2008+ have a TCM and a PCM.
