What kind of walkie-talkies or cb radio do you use???
I know some of you serious off-roaders use cb radios or walkie talkies and not the 10 dollar ones at toys r us. What kind do u suggest that is worth using?? I hear the actual hummer walkie talkies are pretty good....
I installed the Uniden Pro520XL. It's the most smalleset, powerfull radio with integrated speaker I could find that still fits well under dash. Prior to that I used one of the hand held radios, I think it's a Cobra weather radio? The hand held worked just fine, but was a hassle to use; It took up a drink holder slot, and it tended to bounce out onto the floor when off road. I do still keep the hand held, which comes in handy when I'm guiding others, and I'm out walking around. The hand helds are about the same price as the mounted raidios, once you add in the antenna cable, mount, and antenna.
I did a similar installation as in this thread. https://www.hummerforums.com/m_54533/tm.htm
Since there's not much room for a cb in the H3 I went with Cobra 75WXST cb where almost everything is in the microphone, leaving a small box under the dash. I installed a 4' Firestik II antenna on the back between the glass and spare tire, using the mounts for the spare tire carrier. I haven't had a chance to test it out but the install was pretty easy. Radio is about $100, antenna was $27, coax and mount was another $25 or so. [/align]

I use the Cobra HandHeld unit without the external antenna, I haven't had to use the ext. antenna yet. I do what you said just put it in one of the cupholders and away I go.
CB is your best bet. It will work with any other CB out there and give you better range. It can also come in handy on the highway.
Permanently installed CBs have a higher power output than the handheld. I also end up with issues with the handheld and too many cords getting tangled when you use a power supply and an external antenna.
I have the little basic 40 ch Cobra mounted in nice unobtrusive location.

Cobra 75WXST installed in my Alpha with 5' antenna mounted on driver side of rear bumper. Clean installation. Look in my photo gallery there is a picture of the Console area where you can see the Cobra. Gallery is Camou2's H3 Alpha. There may also be a rear picture showing the antenna.
I've had my Amateur Radio license since I was a kid, and I'm in the process of mounting a new Yaesu FT-7800R in my new H3. If the weather cooperates, I'll try to finish it this weekend and post some pictures.

I have the Yaesu FT8800-R UHF/VHF and I usually carry Midland handheld as a spare and for spotting. The hand helds, even with an exterior mounted antenna don't have the range of the permanently installed units.

Midland handheld? Is that CB or FRS/GMRS?

Midland Micro Mobile portable CB (model 75-822 ). You can plug in just the handset or disconnect it and add the battery pack bottom to it for a remote handheld. Also have a Cobra Roadtrip handheld that works pretty well for a radio that costs less than $100.00. The 8800 was about $130.00 more than the 7800. Did you get MARCAP with yours?
