Default What?!?!

just bought an H3 and the window sticker estimated 20mpg on highway and I just made my first trip and got 287 miles when the fuel light came on. that amounts to less than 15mpg. is this what i can expect or might i have something wrong with my truck?

I am afraid that we need some more info: Location, auto/man, load, driving style, engine, cruise speed on trip. Do you have 265-75/16 tires?

Honestly I have gotten 17.7mpg and I am pretty reserved in my driving style.
H3, 3.5L, Auto. Try to stay about 65mph even when speed limit is 75mph. The gas will go fast at 75mph.

Cheers, Doug

Thats what you should expect. My 2006 lux/adv, 2007 lux/adv, and now my 2010 Alpha/offroad all hover around the 15mpg mark. I am in Florida (pretty flat) and 50/50 mix of city/highway.

I have 285 mountain tires and I get far better than 15 mpg on the highway, I get about 17 mpg around town and closer to 22 mpg on highway. When I gun it off every light and merge hard around town it will knock 2 or 3 miles off.

Going thru the hills of WV and VA, with 5 people in the car and 500lbs of extra gear, I got about 17-18mpg. When I make that same trip without the 500lbs of extra gear, I usually hit about 18.6mpg with my t-bars cranked, and the stock 50k mile air-filter thats filthy. The way I adjust my speed is 6-7mph over the speedlimit. So that equates to a large portion of the trip at around 72mph.

You bought the wrong truck if you're even slightly worried about what kind of MPG you get. I bought my truck knowing it likes gas. I don't even look at the trip meter when I fill up. I drive my truck how I like and when it needs gas, I fill it up and don't worry about it.

Live with it and love your truck or trade it in for a shiny new Heep Liberty. lol
(just kidding about the heep liberty thing, I would never recommend anybody buy one of those.)

I'm pretty certain my HUMMER gets better mileage than any Jeep...

But on a side note, it's always good to monitor mileage so you can be alerted to any changes in motor operation etc. If mileage suddenly changes, you know something is up.

Plus, I like to plan every aspect of my travels. Knowing my mileage helps to know where and when I'm gonna stop for a refuel.

thanks for all the input!

on that trip i was running about 76-77 on cruise from Memphis to St. Louis. I do have 265-17/16s.

i am ok with the fuel mileage because it is still better than my old truck got but i was just expecting more like 18-20 hwy.

anyone have any suggestions on things that might help my fuel mileage?

Like I said above.. my truck, down the the bone stock factory air filter, gets damn near 19mpg highway.

I would recommend the airdoc intake, a good filter, perhaps a snorkel, and if your feeling feisty; a good tune.
