Default Tune up and check engine light

ok got a question .
this is on a 2003 H2
i just had tune up . new plugs and wire , air filter , fuel filter, oil change ....
drove home last night with no issues .
drove to work today , no issue . total miles about 15 . then the check engine light came on .

i dont have an OBII scanner so i took it into out local chevy dealer who did the tune up to have it scanned . well they couldn’t scan it as there was a short in the cig lighter that kept popping the fuse .
they had my wife set up a appointment to find the short and then find out why the CE light was on .

the more i thought about it the more i was sure the lighter was the problem . so i changed out the lighter and now it works . so short is fixed .

the dealership said the fuel filter was bad . which made me rather made because i had them replace the fuel pump back in December . guess they didnt change the filter at the same time .
so my first thought was maybe the Mapp was dirty . they said they cleaned it .
but i dont have a Scan tool to run the code . i do need to buy one so what would you folks recommend .
Are the vehicle specific or is there one which works on multiple applications . I know zip about OBII . OBI I have worked
also what might be the cause of the CE coming on. could it just be from the new pugs , air and fuel filters and the O2 sensors seeing the change ?
also it apparently had some E3 type plugs and i went back to factory plugs .

Some auto parts stores will scan your rig for free. The tune up should not make the CEL come on. Make sure your gas cap is on tight. You can buy a generic OBDII scanner at Wal-Mart or most parts stores for $60 or so.

thanks for the reply Phil. i went and pulled the codes today and it showed 2
P0442 and P0442PD
auto zone said it was an evap emmission control leak .
that got me thinking that the also washed it , i crawled under and checked the canister under the drivers door and found one hose wasnt fully seated . so hopfuly that was it and it got pulled back during the power wash .

Evap codes are one of the most common reasons for the CEL light coming on. A loose connection like you found may very well be the cause. Good luck and keep us posted.
