Transmission hunts

Transmission hunts
Does anybody's automatic transmission hunt in and out of gear, torque convertor locks and unlocks on any little pull or grade. Most of the time you can't feel it but you will see it on tach with it moving 3-400 rpm's. I have no codes and the tranny is a 4L60-e in an 07-h3 with 49,000. I took it to the dealer and they knew what I was talking about but they could not duplicate the problem.

My 07 shifts all the time, I have only had it for 2 months and I hate the way it shifts constantly, I took it back to the dealer and they did nothing except tell me that they have had problems with them. I told them GM has always had transmission shifting problems, my 89 iroc did the same thing as well as my 91 1/2 ton. My old 78 chevy truck would do the exact thing you are talking about when it was cold and it turned out to be the front pump going bad. I have never been back to a car dealer for service for the since the last GM product I had back in 92, I should of learned back then. 2 months of ownership and I have spent 4 days at the dealership for problems. My wife says "you should of bought the MDX"

Living in UT surrounded by mountains - yes, my old '07 H3 and my current '09 H3t hunt when going up a steep (or not so steep) grade. Changing to 35" tires affected this as well. Not sure I'd say it's worse, but it is different. Changes gear sooner and stays there longer so some long steep grades it's actually better with 35's. On the other hand, some lesser grades it now hunts when the smaller tires didn't. Like Doc says, I've read one of the things a PCMforless tune does is reduce/eliminate the hunting.

I am running the stock 265/75/16 tires, I just changed the fluid and filter, it looked really dark in the pan. There was the normal debris on the magnet nothing abnormal, everything looked good on the valve body. It seems to be much better now but I have only driven it about 15 miles. It has happened at all speeds, 50-60 on highway and even around town at 40 mph. I plan on doing the PCM tune to it but I want to wait until I get an exhaust on it and I think I am going to install a transgo shift kit in it.

When driving in town you can eliminate the unnecessary shifting into overdrive by running in 3rd gear rather than Drive. (I believe the owners manual may even suggest using 3rd in hilly conditions to keep it from hunting gears).
I only use Drive on flat highways. Your mpg's may even go up in town using 3rd.
I had a Jeep TJ and its auto was even worse about playing the find-a-gear game.
That is the downside of manufacturers using a passenger car overdrive in an offroad geared vehicle.

I was just wanting to get rid of the plastic pistons in the factory valve body. It runs like it should right now. My f250 v-10 that I had would hunt on the mountains in WV and when towing, I fixed it by installing headers, duel exhaust and a shift kit. I know a tune will help, this thing doesn't run too bad, it is no slouch. It does get decent mpg and is a 4x4 and that is what I wanted.
